Hi. Just obtained a pair of BMW 1200 panniers but no paperwork or handbook etc.

Questions -

• Does anyone know the height of the adjustable stud that the pannier locks onto?

• Can anyone tell me how the lock barrels are removed? I have some spare leaves and should be able to re-code them but cannot see how they are removed.

Thanks

On my bike, the distance from the grey plastic of the bike to the underneath of the stud is 22mm.

Cant comment about the lock mechanism, but I'm sure a BMW service dept will tell you.

Swooper-my panniers also came with no handbook, but the top box did-I asked at my dealer and they had no knowledge of a handbook for the panniers but i`m sure they must exist, anyway, the top box locking mechanism is the same and instructions in that handbook are simple: open the case and in the lid there are three philips screws that retain the whole locking/latch assembly, remove these and lift out said assembly. At the rear of the lock cylinder is a yellow plastic "thingy"- wiggle this out (you may have to put the key in and turn the lock to achieve this but no force is needed it will simply pull out. This exposes the rear of the lock cylinder and with a small screwdriver you can depress the small spring loaded metal retaining plate and release the lock itself.I managed to swap the tumblers in my cases to match after scrounging some extra ones at my dealers so all locks now match ign :) On re-assembly look inside the lock housing itself and you will see four raised lugs in the plastic- one of these has a chamfered leading edge and this is to allow the lock retaining plate to ride up on when re-inserting the barrel, just turn the barrel as you offer it up and it will "find" its way back in and click home as the retaining plate springs out once the barrel is fully inserted. Once the lock is in, replace the yellow plastic "thingy"- (the slot is offset so it only fits one way)and replace the whole assembly back into the case-done.Tip: when replacing the three self tapping screws that hold the assy in the case lid-offer the screw into the hole and use the screwdriver to gently turn the screw backwards i.e. anti-clockwise until you feel a slight click as the screw drops into its thread start point- then screw it in. This avoids the screw cutting a "new" thread in the soft plastic and in doing so mashing up the old one and weakening the whole plot, HTH, regards Bob "C"

Help with 1200 pannier barrel re code

Brilliant

Thanks for the instructions again. The lock recode was pretty straight forward apart for my being short of 2 x No 3 leaves.

So if anyone has a couple spare No 3's or would like to swap for some of the many No 1 or No 2 leaves I now have, please let me know.

If you could send me a PM with your address I will send a stamped addressed envelope for them to be sent to me in. If you need any in return I will send them at the same time.

Thanks

Swooper - I went to my dealer (Southport Superbikes) and they had a pile of levers from various locks - they just allowed me to take the ones I needed in exchange for the ones I didn't need from my locks.

Maybe see if your local dealer (Jeffries?) will do the same.
