Looking at buying a twinmax to sync the throttle bodies.

Any tips.

Is it as easy as just adjusting the throttle cables. And at what RPM should it be done at.

You can't adjust the idle on a 1200 with a twinmax ( or any other gauges)

No set RPM , just see how it is throughout the rev range, and adjust accordingly.

The more you do it, the easier it becomes. ( but the twinmax is shite, IMHO)

I've been using old-fashioned mercury carb sticks on our bikes over the years... weight of the mercury damps nicely so it is easy to see the difference between the two carbs or throttle bodies.

Conventional wisdom is that the most critical range is where the butterfly is part-way open - that's where I tend to aim for the closest match.

Logic is that at idle it is not about the butterflies - which are sitting on its stops. It's also not about WFO, because as the buttefly gets close to WFO, small differences between the two don't make for big differences in airflow.

That's how I did the succession of airheads and oilheads that have been through our family ...

and I've generally gotten them to be pretty smooth.

One thing I would like to know from a grownup is how different is the two 02 sensor setup on the 1200's compared to our older 1100's with the single sensor...is the computer comparing the two and adjusting mixture of each cylinder constantly?

I've been out of town so much that I only have about 4k miles on my new GS and while I checked throttle body balance with the carb sticks at about 2k, it runs smoothly enough that I can't be bothered to check again until I actually have to do something else on the bike...

So what do people recommend at a sensible cost for DIY ?

It's on the site somewhere, a Rob Farmer tip -

Costs about £3, and far superior to a twin max. A homemade manometer. :thumb

I use mercury gauges, which are over 20years old, and are now illegal to sell. But they're the dogs do daa's

Difficult to do a load test while riding the bike with that plank though

I used two stroke oil.. cos I thought that it wouldnt do damage in case you know what !

Cheap and easy to use... butI have been unable to achieve the smoothness that the dealer achieved at the last service. They can park the stepper motors with their GT1 comp (think that is what it is called) , but others have said that the steppers only play a part at idle and are insignificant at say 3000rpm :nenau

I have read that you should check valve clearances FIRST, then balance throttle bodies
:D
