1200adv

i saw my first one in the flesh in Luxembourg today.

Compared to the standard (and better) 1200 it looks .... well.........Fat!

There's short review in MCN about it, they seem impressed and reckon it's suprisingly good off road. They also say that the standard 1200 is a womans bike compared with it :thumb

You could have fooled me, or is someone just phishing. I've yet to meet a bird riding an R1200GS. Respect to any that do. Still, wtf do I know about it, I only have 20k on mine so far, I bow to MCN and their superior knowledge.

They are "experienced motorcycle journalists" after all. :tosser

As JB says... probably Robson's policy. The launch is after all the 24th. Not heard anything about not being allowed them until Monday though!

All I need to do now, my purpose for being, is to get a picture of my bike out on the road, on here, before you..... :dabone

I'm only kidding... :beerjug:

Oh no he's not!

I think that is because they need time to clean your bike. I seriously saw a new 1200 gsa out in the rain on Friday afternoon in York. Looked great.

The launch of the Adventure

Have just come back from the Beaujolais where I saw the Adventure for the first time. I must say it looks impressive and not just like (my) 1200GS with bits stuck on - even if that is what it amounts to. The screen looked very solid and the bits of curved 'glass' just behind, presumably for added protection looked interesting. I liked the way the large fuel tank is not too obtrusive. The new BMW metal luggage looked very solid and well attached - I dare not ask 'how much!' I could not help reflecting that had KTM offered their bikes to McG and B'man they would be launching their new model with a rather larger fanfare.

I passed the first one on the road on the way up to Hursts for the launch today. Impressive looking on the road to say the least. :thumb

Here's a few pics of Hursts demo bike. :)

Nick
Visited your favorite dealer to have a look and sit ,
V smart and feels like the old ADV should be a worthy successor
to my 1200 when it's warranty runs out :)

Oh dear, we are all entitled to our opinions

Smeg, how did you manage to get pics with nobody around it? I had to fight my way through the crowd and then tell them to feck aff while I got my picture took, with MY BIKE! :D

Well well!!,I went to pidcocks today to try the seat as every one else seems to have done, and had two big supprises?,,,
1= The seat is not as bad as i had imagined,1200 low seat is better but colours range odd?.
2= When I got to the shop knowing my bike was due on week 20  , after sept 05 ordering!! There were 2 extra available bikes supplied by BMW and no owners!!, If I was to pay a good few pounds extra for the top spec machines then I could have one of them!!!. ( Wrong colour ).
My bike (lower spec) is still due week 20,   .

So if you want a ADV in silver fully specked, there available now...

went to mallusk to view just got in and no more to see it thought they was open till 4pm today saturday looks good would i buy prob not would be a 12 gs for me

I was getting the fork seals changed at BMW Hertford and a fully kitted model was outside waiting for its new owner. It looks very front heavy compared to my 1150 but looks the dogs dangles.

It's not just you Nick...............

I just don't get the excitement about the Adv. Styling changes, a bigger tank and a higher price. Previous 12GS critics are now smitten. Didn't take much, did it? :nenau

But then I don't get 4x4 cars for the urban poseur either. I would choose another 5-series instead of an X5, as the latter is a styling exercise based on the former's chassis, with poorer economy, a higher price, less interior space, dodgier handling(although not bad for a big machine, I will concede), minimal off-road ability and a dubious image. So why would you choose one?

It's about style, image and ego rather than true ability.........as it is with the 12Adv.

How much can I disagree, with you.
Lets see, having previously owned an 1100 GS, bought the 1150 ADV, because yes the looks did it for me. Is that not important. i didn't like the Overdrive gear on the 1150 GS, but thought the full 6th was what it should have been on the bike on the first place. The tank range was awesome, just what I needed for crossing Europe, as I have many times, and continuously commented on by my Rice Rocket mates.
When the 12 came out, wasn't sure about the looks, and never was, and still not. Have seen a lot of heavily modified 12's since, which came up to the mark, IMHO, but it took a lot of mulla to get there. Then I rode the 12, on a service day for the 1150, and suddenly fell in love with the 12 engine, couldn't believe it, thought it was tremendous. I new that the 12 Adv was coming and decided to wait. I wasn't and haven't been disappointed,. It is everything I have wanted the GS to be. The tank, the suspension, the looks, the presence, the off road capability, especially here in Ireland. now I've only 3 weeks to wait. For my Possers tool, (NOT). :thumb

Based on the fact that most people, I guess, will buy a bike on its looks as much as its handling ability, etc, I think it should be no real surprise that the 12ADV is getting the interest it appears to be. I include meself in this. I have never really taken to the standard 12, as I felt it lacked the presence of the 1150/1100. For me, the standard doesn't have that almost indefinable 'something'.

However, although I have only seen photos of the ADV, it does it for me. I think it is more in keeping with the 1150, and that suits me. At the end of the day, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as they say. I would very much like one in due course, and no I am not a shallow poser. I want one because, like the 1150 when it first came out, it just looked right...to me.
Thats all that matters, isn't it?

Cheers

p.s. anyone want to sell their 12 ADV for, lets see...(counts change in pocket).......£0.20?

No?

Oh well, I tried :D

It's a nice looking bike all right and that's likely to be the main reason why some people will choose to buy it.

For me. I am quite happy with my 'normal' 1200GS. I couldn't justify the Adventure either rationally or emotionally. I'd quite like to try one out to see what differences there are. But an extra 25kg dry weight alone is not an attractive point for me.

Kai
