1200GSA LC ESA harsh suspension

Still suggest that you talk to John at Revs Racing, and agree that you shouldn't have any comfort issues at all when riding a big trail bike over tarmac.

My LC suspension is 'plush' when I wind the little turny thing at the bottom of the rear shock anti-clockwise and firmer when I turn it clock-wise - there is a massive difference from one extreme to the other. The front shock doesn't have any adjustment, the bike handles very well one or two-up and is comfortable all day long.

I've just taken my new '14 TE from the dealer. The bike feels plusher than my '13 TE,not by much but I think it's enough to keep me happy. I think it might be the fact that the springs on my new bike are white instead of black. BMW are trying to fool me that they've reverted back to WP ESA and it's worked-I'm a sucker for a white spring.

Sadly it's back there in the morning as the tyre pressure monitors don't work-what a shame it didn't get a thorough PDI-oh bugger!!

White springs are lighter than black springs, so you're off to a flying start.:beerjug:

That's a start with them admitting a fault is there. Hope you get it sorted soon. Be interested to see what it is/was.

Jon

You're just not carrying the right amount of pies about. Aren't they sprung for the typical Bavarian / Tosser?

No, but it is now confirmed that there is indeed a fault.

I will update this when I have some info as to what it is.... at the moment, it has everyone perplexed.

thats good it will be interesting to see what they come up with :)

Speaking to my dealer today, BMW has informed them that the 2015 GSA will have an update to the suspension to make it handle better. I'll try and find more out, and will update when I do.:thumb It must have something to do with this.

Paul,
Any progress...
which dealer are you with? So I can get AJ's to talk to them and confer.
Currently with Chester Motorrad.

After my 3rd visit, they feel it is the front shock that is at fault and will be replacing it soon.

I'm not convinced it is the front shock that is at fault here as the rear feels just as harsh. I believe it to be something more deep rooted than just the front shock.

If the issue is not rectified following the next visit I will not be so understanding and will be pursuing the matter further. The bike can not be ridden with complete confidence due to its unpredictable handling.... it's only going to be a matter of time before it ends up throwing me off :(

Suspension kicking back often feels harsh as a bump hits wheel that's on its (fast) way back down from the previous bump. Usually a sign the damping has failed.

.... The problem with mine is the bike is always too stiff.

The rider/rider luggage/rider pillion settings do seem to function, and there is a noticeable difference between hard and soft in different modes.... but the bike is always so stiff that traversing a cats eye (or similar bump) at anything other than upright is a very frightening sphincter twitching experience

For the first 9,000 miles the dynamic suspension was the best part of my 14 GSA, it just glided over broken pavement and washboard dirt roads but a few days ago something changed. I was riding back from the MOA rally in Minnesota and recall on Monday when I started the bike in the morning (It was in the 1-up with luggage setting) the suspension lowered itself down on its own. I immediately toggled through the settings and got it back up where it had been and didn't think anything of it. To be honest riding on smooth Ohio roads the rest of the day I didn't notice anything different. Or perhaps that had nothing to do with the shock(s)?
But back on the broken, patched up pavement in WV the bike became almost unridable. I took it out again yesterday with the bags off and set on "solo rider w/o luggage, soft" and rode on a particularly poor road surface and it rides horribly stiff, almost as if someone took 5w oil out of the shocks and replaced it with 30w! I guess I better book a date with the dealer.

oh dear. quality* bmw suspension strikes again.

*the usual shit quality, that is.

Supposedly the failure mode for the ESA is the same as Hard mode damping. I wonder if that is not quite true, and it goes way past the Hard settings? Hopefully this is just a software glitch to fix.
