1200GSA Panniers Now look Like Crap

If you need to coat it in something to protect it from one days use on a UK road in the winter then I'm sorry but that leads me to wonder it the product really did come "as standard" "ready to tackle anything Mother Nature can throw at it".

Mother nature didn't wreck them.............the local Highways Dept gritter wagon did by spreading road salt

Ring the District Engineer in the morning and submit a claim for damages

Still fail to see why it's a manufacturing fault/product liability issue for BMW :nenau

They aren't responsible for the state of the roads, are they

At the moment I'm very tempted to buy some ACF-50 and coat mine, the only problem is once I've done that I can't then return them to BMW if I have a problem with them in the future.

Its only a protective coat. I can't see that it would affect any subsequent discussion with BM.

Well what can I say.

Certainly did not expect, the sort of comments received. Anyway I will take to the dealer and see what they say.

Thanks for your comments, I think

Hi Guys

To give you an update, not to sure why I should after your, well less then positive responses and somewhat abusive remarks.

Took it to BMW dealers today, one guy took a look and said absolutely no way should the panniers look like that after 4 months, I'll just get someone else to take a look; the second guy said the same thing he also wanted someone else to take a look and the third guy said maybe after 2 years they should look like that. They even tried to polish the pit marks out with Autosol but to no avail.

Without hesitation or discussion they have ordered new panniers and booked my bike in to have them fitted.

WOW what service

All the best

Common sense really does prevail!!!

Excellent! really good news!

As my wife just said... "score one for Jo Public!"

Ask them when you collect the new set what they would recommend to protect them in future? I like the idea of ACF50, but I'd want the nod from a dealer that is was the right product to use otherwise if I was a dealer I think I might be tempted to suggest it could have been the cause of the problem.

Congratulations Ty!

From what I've read, I make that just the three of us who were expecting them to replace the panniers under warranty. Good news and well done for sticking to your guns. :thumb

re panniers

Hi I am glad to hear all went well!! that gives us who have the same bike and panniers some reassurance .never gave a thought to the weather/salt on my old 1150GSA (though always washed of the crud in winter after a ride)so shouldn't have to on the 12! Good News :beerjug:

Panniers

Well done!!!! Just goes to show if you don't ask you'll never know...

No, thats at least 4 of us who thought that should happen, only difference is I would possibly have asked for a refund and bought something else in order to prevent it happening again.

Good luck with the new ones though.

I would suggest the dealer would laugh at you. They are obviously 'fit for purpose', ie fit to carry stuff in. Just coz the surface has marked in this way does not make them unfit for their intended purpose.

I cannot agree with that statement. If the paint peeled off the tank, the bike would remain "fit for purpose" but look like sh*t. I think it should be taken in the context of what the average man in the street would accept as reasonable. Pitting like that after five years hard all weather use would be OK. On a new bike, and a BMW at that? Unacceptable in my view.

Just my opinion

Well done!

Clearly, your expectations were in line with the dealer's.

And yes, you are correct - some people (with degrees in metalurgy? :nenau ) were less than helpful.

If you can take off the plastic corners when you get the boxes, it would be worthwhile getting them professionally painted, then the corner bits put back on. I wouldn't worry about warranty now - just sort them so that it doesn't happen again.

Isn’t it funny that all the negative people who placed there negative remarks seem to have abandoned this thread in the knowledge that there comments where unhelpful and to some extent wrong

Myself and few others where right, including BMW...................

it should be interesting to see how long it takes for the corrosion to occur again.

Well done lads.............but as Cookie says it will happen again without some sort of coating

You know I was beginning to wonder if they might have been BMW employees... it was definately starting to sound like they might have been...

Good luck with the laquor, it does the trick. I used to use it on a very old CB125 I had, the only thing I dont like about it is that when it gets old it can start to lift and flake. Better than pitted panniers, but it would look a bit of a mess. It was probably just the way I applied it, but it might be worth checking out.

FFS you asked a question on an internet forum, you must realise not everybody will agree with you, i've scanned the posts again and have failed to see where you were given duff information, there were people that didn't see things they way you wanted, but thats life.

You've got the result from BMW which I expected, well done :thumb
