1200GSA with StahlKoffers

Some pics of the latest bits, bought and fitted today, for my R1200GSA - a set of StahlKoffer panniers in gunmetal grey with black lids.

Many thanks to Bernie of this parish (Bernt56) for supplying these at short notice and at a great price. Hopefully one of his topboxes will follow in the near future!

Quality of workmanship is outstanding and the new mounting setup is very quick, easy and secure once on.

If anyone local wants a look, drop me a PM. Highly recommended

Total width of panniers is just under 41 inches - compares to 40 at widest point of handguards.
Colour match on the panniers with my Magnesium Grey GSA is pretty much bob-on - despite what the sun and crappy camera phone show up.

Had to trim my Maier mudsling a bit to get the clamps on the frame, but no big deal.

- no they're not wonky - the drive's pissed

Thanks for that. Just looked on their website but stickers look a bit pricey. Our range of GS stickers (for the F650/800GS/1100/1150/1200GS ) range will be selling for around £2.00 each.
For anyone interested they will be available to purchase at the London Bike Show next week.

I bought a pair too - they make the bike wobble over 70MPH and Bernie says they shouldn't be driven over that speed. If you are still using padlocks they will wear a hole in no time. Email me and I'll send you a picture of a decent locking system. If you are thinking of a topbox make sure you double nut the lugs as mine fell off and went through somebody's windscreen in Spain. The top case bracket doesn't fit and you will have to mill out the supporting bracket. The plastic nuts provided are a joke and vibrate loose. My panniers still stick out 5 cm too much on the right hand side. I have had some 40 emails from the maker and a lot of empty promises. I was supposed to receive a new bracket (8 months ago) and was promised a bag liner but that never materialised. Check all fittings regularly, as on long journeys (4600k over 11 days) they can come loose. See my comments on the site. My email for photos is [email protected]

Do other makers also put speed restrictions when riding with panniers?

I still have the standard plastic ones and rode for days with constant speed of 100mph with no drama. I am considering buying alu ones but 70mph limit is a no no for me.

As far as I know manufacturers do place speed limits on luggage but think it is more from a litigation viewpoint rather than a real world view. It's a bit like a 5 kg limit on a topbox.

I haven't experienced any wobble at 70 or over, just a drop in economy. I've used some of the wife's heel gels (that stop shoes rubbing) where the padlocks bang. Any info on locks that will be a straight swop for Bernie's, that will sit with the existing holes will be most welcome

Mine are tested to 165mph, but you should be alright if you want to go faster

First, I'm happy with the frame and box designs.

I just took delivery in early June on a set of Citykoffers (the narrower version of the Stahlkoffer). Compared to most of the pictures at their website, mine are chamfered and have locking clasps....appear to be the newest version. The frame is plastic coated and the top rear bar is 1 piece that goes all the way across (the Touratech is 2 pieces and gives less lateral stability in my opinion).

My problem: after 2000 km this past weekend, the left pannier rests slightly loose against the frame. The foam strip that holds it tight on one side has compressed. Has anyone replaced this strip with a solid rubber that doesn't loose its elasticity? The pannier is at no risk of falling off the frame...just a bit of rattle.

Are there issues with these Stahlkoffers? I was looking at buying a set soon but don't want to waste my money. £600 is a lot when I have a perfectly servicable set of BMW luggage which only doesn't look as good as the Stahlkoffer stuff.

If not Stahlkoffer where else should I look at a comparable price?

Which MBW luggage? I had system panniers on my R1150GSA but they were a PITA and bought Stahlkoffers.

You could also try ARDCases but you have to buy your own frames separately, although not a problem.

If you are going to do any crashing then Verns' World Beaters is the way to go, for a bit more money.

Bernies newer stuff looks great, also got his latest fastenings(locks) instead of the padlocks I still use and still a cracking price, including the frame.
