I admit to not having seen one but suspect it has something to do with sealing the gaiter to the swing arm?

Looks a crap way of keeping the water out
What happened to the 'heavy' zip ties (or metal bands. even better) of old

Fair enough.
In your opinion would/could the lock up have caused damage to the crown wheel and pinion as I'm guessing the forces required to bend the end of the UJ are significant?
I've just looked at the repair manual and number 3 on the image is not there.

Finally gave up trying to remove the shaft from the rear and took the swing arm off the bike.
There was large amounts of crap in the bottom of the arm, it appeared to be mainly grit and bearings etc
Unfortunately, the drive shaft spinning around in the swing arm when not connected to the FD has damaged the area where the gaiter should seal and therefore the gaiter will never seal satisfactorily.
So it needs another swing arm too!
I have communicated my view with the supplying dealer and it is my opinion that it was purchased from the dealer with the faults present and therefore their responsibility to repair the bike.
