1250 battery / starting problems

Back from dealer, excellent service as usual from Reiten Mottorad, full check of charge rate, fault codes, faulty battery diagnosed as expected and replaced FOC, this is the only problem I have had with this bike. :-)

i have a r1250gs ,the battery let me down almost straight away ,since then it has been replaced via a bmw dealer, come the day its out of warrantee i will be changing the battery for something more substantial ,if i have one fault with this bike its exactly that ,the battery i seem to remember in small print on the battery its made by exide

It’s happened to me 4 times in a month. Always after stopping when engine hot for fuel etc.

First time I called the recovery which was about 90 mins but it started again after an hour :blast I declined recovery as I was half way to work at 5:30 in morning.

In hindsight I wish I had it recovered as now I can’t get it booked in until 7th April but I was stranded two weeks ago.

I also now have a jumper pack..... but because of the possibility of it being the compression release valve I don’t want to “force crank” the engine in case I end up doing more damage. I’m not convinced it’s my battery but also hoping it is

So just a week to wait now and with the temps dropping to minus 1 next week I won’t be using it much

It's happened to me 3 times, nearly missed a ferry with it.

Been into the dealer, nothing wrong with it Grrr!!

Why wait until warranty is out? I too have an R1250GS (2019) and have already changed the battery myself as don't want to run the risk that it may (unexpectedly) let me down - as no doubt if it did it would be at exactly the wrong time and I really wouldn't want to wait unnecessarily for BMW to come out to get me started. Swapped my standard one out (and yes it is an Exide) for a heavier duty one, Yuasa YTX14H-BS which gives 240CCA (over the standard 200CCA), now turns over much quicker - even though the original battery was showing a full charge when I took it out. Just over £80 to change, now have peace of mind.

For reference, my understanding from dealers is that there was a bad batch of batteries around late 2019 (which no doubt finished up on some early 2020 bikes) so whilst mine arguably wasn't in "the range", better safe than sorry.

pro active rather than re active makes a nice change:okay

I don't have a GS of any shape now but my 1200 twin Yam had a similar hot start problem. It also has a starting decompressor although I believe that it is working correctly. A LiPo battery solved my problem and saved a few kilo's in weight at the same time.

You do need a LiPo specific charger though.

Known fault it’s caused by latest lithium battery’s fitted, had mine replaced by dealer under warranty, replaced it with old style battery as fitted to 1200 , no issues since .

Booked into supplying Dealer this morning (100 mile round trip) to investigate why been stranded a couple of times on my 20 month old R1250 when it flags up "Low Battery warning" after stopping to refuel for example and wont start, both times while waiting for BMW recovery it then started ? anybody else experienced similar problems with the 1250 / 1200 range?
