Doing your own research by looking at the configurator on the Motorrad UK website might be good start, then you can ask more specific questions if there is anything you don't understand.

When i went for the basic GS with added bits,eg comfy seat, higher etc i was worse off than buying the TE and taking off the "sat nav" cradle. So i bought the TE,with comfy seat and had the BMW dealer remove the "sat nav" bits (now in a drawer). MAD!!!

I don't think there is any difference in seats between models, you just get the standard seat on the TE like everything else, and you must have added all the option packs to a basic model to have it cost more than the TE. It is always more expensive if you do that, and if you add just some of the individual items from an option pack it soon gets to the point where it costs no more, or even less to take the full pack. Well worth playing with the configurator to get the best bang for your buck.

I bought a basic as I didn’t want keyless, ESA or the quickshifter which are all standard on the TE. AFAIC all bits to go wrong and had them on previous bike. QS was iffy and ESA is expensive to replace when, not if, it goes wrong. Keyless but only one key. Another one is £160 but their cars get 2 included!! At least Dick Turpin wore a mask.

I wanted a keeper that could be maintained with less risk of faults. Bought Ohlins TTX for just a bit more than the cost of one replacement ESA unit. And they have multiple settings rather than the ones the factory chooses.

Really pleased and no regrets. Just do it.

Yes. The base model GS1250 is £13400. I bought a base GSA1250 and added what I wanted (to the tune of an additional £1000). Dealers will 'dis-encourage' you from doing so and (in some cases) but the reality is it is an option. Yes, there comes a point where the cost can get close to the TE price, so it's a case of looking at the numbers and weighing up whether you want to simply unbolt the bits you don't want (from a TE) or spec the bike from the base model. The used market for base models is inevitably narrower than the TE model (in the UK) which becomes relevant at re-sale / part exchange, but there is always a buyer out there. I decided not to keep my GSA without ESA earlier this year and part exchanged it back with the dealer for a GS TE. I note my base non ESA GSA hardly gathered any dust on their forecourt and was re-sold within a couple of weeks (max).

We may be buying the depreciation, but can we cope with the anxiety? :D And still I wouldn’t swap her!

With the basic model are you stuck with just two riding modes; Road and Rain? Can you access Dyna modes at all, otherwise surely you are not getting the full 125bhp (whatever it is now) or have I got this wrong?

ok guys thanks very much, yes i have now seen 1250,s with no electronic suspension .
thankyou for your replys.

You are still getting the full 125bhp in road mode .

Dealers get larger profit margins on a TE , Basics are available but usually not off the shelf and are factory special orders .

Talking to 2 Turkish lads in Austria and they were interested in my 1200GSA Basic as the Turkish importer will not supply Basics even on special order (one lad tried a number of dealers there ) due to making so much more on TE's .

In 3 years on my TE I rarely used dynamic as the harsh suspension was worse and similarly never used Enduro or the Enduro Pro plug................ waste of money

With the pro-plug in you can use Dynamic throttle and Road ESA and it does not reset when you turn off the ignition!

I am just back from my (luckily) second European tour this year using my 2018 model R1200GSA Basic, previously I owned a 2014 GSA TE model and hated the ESA and GSAP, plus never used the riding modes .

Before I bought the Basic two years ago I was travelling back from Austria through Germany (460 miles in one day ) and I thought about what I actually needed on a replacement GSA :-

1. Heated grips
2. Sat nav Cradle
3. Onboard Computer Pro for the extra functionality
4. Pannier Rails
5. Cruise Control
6. LED Aux lights

On my last bike the ESA and GSAP were nothing but trouble and as I said I never used Dynamic mode, Enduro mode or the Enduro Pro modes , similarly never ride in the dark so did not want an LED headlight.

I therefore ordered a Basic with the options I wanted saving money and I have in my opinion a better bike for me , in normal solo use I never have to adjust the suspension and when I go away touring with luggage and a pillion it takes probably 60 seconds to adjust the rear suspension (hardly a chore).

So no SOS. Keyless, GSAP, Dynamic ESA and other stuff I never use .

I just wonder how many who get seduced into buying a TE model never use their pannier rails or the matching panniers and top boxes they have paid well over £1000 for.

If I decide to change my 1200GSA for a 1250GSA when it is 3 years old it will again be a basic specced up with what I actually need and not just a bike fitted with a load of unneccesary acronyms

yes my thoughts exactly

What does the Onboard Computer Pro, give you?

For one thing, I believe you can have the speed displayed digitally on the standard dash screen (in the bit that normally has temp/pressures etc?)

It's a massive pisstake that you have to pay for that, IMO.
