1250GS test ride impression

Well I kind of expected that, well some of it, no need for the abuse. Typical responses from GS owners in the main. That particular bike was fundamentally flawed with all of the above. Yes I rode it very hard, I use a quickshifer on a daily basis that works and ride my 200+ brake sports bike also so please don't talk down to me. Anyone thinking they could bust my cherry would be very embarrassed!!
It was constructive criticism.

As I have more or less the same bike (a MY2018 1200) I'd say the GS you rode isn't typical of what to expect, though I am surprised the dealer leant you a bike that hadn't been run in or had it's 1st service. The GSAP isn't a quickshifter and does take some getting used to including how to get the best from it and where it doesn't work so well, something you wouldn't be able to establish during a test ride.

Been running my 1250 rallye for about 6/700 miles now and fully agree with the comments about getting the best out of the shifter. I am really pleased with mine having come from a 2014 GS. they are chalk and cheese, although i am riding a new bike compared to one with 25k+ on it.

I find that the increase in power is really noticeable, in fact the XR in the garage might just be getting the chop soon, as the GS has much more usable power.

I get that on my GSA for the weekly commute. 24-36mpg. Not all of us ride like old men
24-36mpg? Not even a twat can achieve that. The worst I ever had was 44mpg once...for research purposes.

Sorry, typo. I meant 34-36 mpg. Don't think I've ever been below 34.

I can’t understand how the abs was locking up the back wheel. Surly only the abs wasn’t working or switched off. In reality it was your over enthusiastic use of the brake pedal. If the abs was over sensitive the wheel would never lock up. JJH

To be honest I was pushing the bike very enthusiastically but I kid you not something very odd was going on when it unloaded the rear end. Never experienced it on any other motorcycle. Sorry but I didn't imagine it.

Ignore them !! Typical replies from condescending GS owners who won’t have a word said against their beloved steed-Delboy777 will be along shortly to prove this point.........

I tried a GS1250 and had very similar thoughts to you.
The suspension was horrid in Dynamic mode and the GSAP was the worst I’ve used .
What utter bollox saying you need to know how to use it-I currently have a quick shifter on my 790R, Husky Svartpilen and Kwak H2 SX SE and they are all very smooth, the Kwak version being utterly sublime, yet the GSAP was extremely clunky and reluctant to shift .Perhaps the exhaust butterfly valve was already seized ? :-)

I tested and bought the 1250 GSA, on the basis of the quick shifter, suspension, engine, hill start are all a country mile better than the previous versions, which I felt were probably designed by John Deere. As Casbar said, you do need to know how to use the GSAP, which is still not as good as a Ducati’s but it’s certainly acceptable.

Best get a ktm as I believe they are much better :D

Gearshifter and suspension are the same as the old model?

New member or existing one re joined on the wind up?

Sorry but an 1150 is a old battle bus, I could have fallen for this if it hadn’t referenced the old bike, so I reckon you are taking the piss mate, that or entering senility.

The bike’s not run in yet. My 1250 had a pretty stiff quick shifter when new except when really caning it from 3-4-5-6 and the suspension was quite harsh.

After a couple of thousand miles everything bedded in nicely and it has supple, well damped suspension and the quick shifter is very slick in all gears :thumby:

You clearly know very little about GS's then, or are just ignorant of how good the older models were!?

Sorry, but not everybody has to like the bike you just bought and proceeded to bore everybody with by starting 28 individual threads about every individual component !

The OP has his own opinion as we are all entitled to. Enjoy your new bike. I’m sure it’s just perfect for you.

To be fair I hear everything you are saying, I said the same to the dealer and he said just ride it, all I would say is that if this is the case BMW need to get 1,000 miles plus on their demo. bikes before letting them go out to the public. Having said that the suspension should not change a great deal. Unfortunately the vast majority of GS's are ridden by people incapable of exploiting the flaws as with any bike.

Glad someone agrees, I did smile when I was told I had to know how to use it and also it's not a quickshifter. I too have ridden an H2 SX SE and the quickshifter was sublime.

The upsetting thing to me us that I still love the GS but it really is showing it's age.

Same goes for the orange squad ! You lot are fast enough to slag off the 1250 at every opportunity, so why can’t i fo the same about the KTM’s ? Because you are trying to justify purchasing one in the first place. Yes I probably did bore everyone to death with my posts but there is nobody forcing anyone to read them is there ?

What’s with the orange squad bollox ?

I own one KTM and two GSs currently, as well as other bikes.
I sold my 1290 because it left me cold.
I tried the 1250 but didn’t like the suspension and found the gearbox/GSAP a bit shite. Similar findings to the OP of this thread.

Just because you are happy with your bike doesn’t stop others having a differing view.

The quick shifter is absolutely fine on my 1250 RT, it wasn't horrible on my 1200 either. But there are many who do not know how to use it correctly and complain about it. You do sound like you on a wind up. I've had a 1150 and its a tractor compared to the water cooled bikes, so either you had a pup or you are not the riding god you think.

I agree with that. My mate took a GSA out for a test ride and said the QS was shite. But i listened to him as he rode off and he was trying to ride it like a gsxr loads of revs and thrashing it. Thats not the way to get the best out of it, for sure.
