1250GSA battery replacement

Shop around, but they are quite pricey if you are expecting to pay lead acid prices.

Bloody good batteries though, IMO they are worth paying that bit extra for.

Ok so i bought a battery and had it delivered today.
I found it at the back of my gate.

Am i being petty or am i justified to be pissed off the way it was delivered?
there doesn't appear to be any damage, but could there possibly be unseen damage 👿

it experienced far worse before it got into this chap's van

thing is, these AGM batteries survive in off road bikes, jetskis and snowmobiles. They can cope with being inverted and abused.

Now you mention it, i wouldn't be surprised.

Thing is when i opened it there is no padding or bubble wrap, so battery took the full hit (through a bit of cardboard)
i half expected it to be leaking out acid through a crack in the plastic.
Sportsbikeshop are to blame, nowhere on the packaging does it say fragile or keep upright.

By the way i could get the battery i wanted above for love nor money, the Motobatt MHTX16 is out of stock everywhere.
on searches the Motobatt MHTX20 comes up, not sure if that would work.

So i ended up getting all i could find, which is the YUASA YTZ14S for £70

I would send it back unless you need it urgently.
You don’t need a cracked battery leaking all over your bike.

Sportbikeshop do free returns.

You can’t unsee what the delivery chap did to your battery.

it's not fragile and it does not need to be kept upright. Re-read my last post.

SBS use DPD and I doubt any of their machines or operatives read a sticker on a box. A condition of carriage is that the sender uses a suitable container. Even Tayna only use a basic cardboard box when they ship batteries. I doubt they would do that if they had lots of returns due to batteries not being robust.

Its the opposite of "I hope this fucker starts again if I pull in for petrol, I've only been out ten min
You aren't a real biker until you've lived this scenario for 6-8 months over winter. Then you replace with OEM that is worse than the original.

Went for the Yuasa YTX14H-BS in the end, now fitted. Was a bit of a fiddle with the plastic cover but all good. Supplied by Tayna batteries £80 next day delivery. Thanks all for your input..
How did you fit it? The square spacers it comes with are tiny compared to the BMW ones?

I noticed that... I used a cable tie folded in half and tucked it under to hold it up until threads started. You could probably file the holes and fit originals if you wanted..

Ha joy!

This video popped up in my YouTube recommended viewing earlier, which I found quite interesting. It makes me wonder if higher capacity or hybrid batteries may be masking a potential problem.

So on topic but on a tangent, my battery has completely died. It wont charge at all. Bike wont even turn on.

I rode around Europe 3500 miles no issues. Came back on end of September, I rode 45 miles on the 10th October. Parked it up and its dead on the 27th October. So less than 3 weeks.

I am now using a C-Tek xs 0.8 never had any issues. It just sits on the desulphate cycle. Tried on and off for the last few days.

Battery is 18 months into its useable life.

I have a tracker but I have left it longer and no issues.

Only new thing I have is a Peak Design phone charger that I rushed and just wired straight to the battery BUT it has a dodgey SAE connector so the charging drops in and out. Nothing has been on the mount since I came back from Europe. So it may draw charge but not charging anything.

Any thoughts on the beyond dead battery?

A battery is very simple, typically just plates of lead separated by an insulator layer and all swimming in an acid based electrolyte.

A 12 volt battery is usually six such simple cells built in series, each delivering around 2.1volts each. If one cell goes bad, it takes the lot down with it. If your bike wont even turn on, it has really poor volts per cell charge remaining or is open circuit (aka knackered).

Similarly, if the cell voltage goes low the plates develop a hard layer of lead sulphate that prevents them working. Desulphating mode chargers send a burst charge in pulses to shock off the sulphate from the surface, its typically a pretty crap way of squeezing a bit more temporary life from a knackered battery.

I wouldn't bother trying to desulphate any battery, I'd just replace it.

As for the peak design charger I know nothing about them, but some chargers can draw power if they have a solid state power converter inside even when the mount is empty.

There are extensive threads on the forum about the 1250 battery, including the one I started myself mentioned earlier in the thread.

sounds like it is deep discharged due to the current drawn by the tracker and charger (they draw a tiny amount when "asleep")

you will not recover it whilst it is connected to the bike as the Ctek is unlikely to enter the recovery cycle if there is a load on the circuit.

the recovery cycle will damage onboard circuitry due to the high voltage spikes used hence the protection in the algorithm

as mentioned in the previous post, it is probably wise to replace the deep discharged battery. Then sort out your phone charger so it is on a switched circuit and has reliable leads. Then sort out the charging regime to compensate for the tracker. Unless the tracker is an insurance requirement I would get rid of it but I live in a low risk area!

I don't know what you've done so far... but... have you removed the battery from the bike ? Have you charged it whilst off the bike ? If yes, does the current draw reduce slowly over several hours ? What's the battery voltage (after it's been left unconnected for a few hours and measured with a trusted multimeter) ? Does a charger actually try to charge it ? At only 18 months... that's not long.

@wessie @Pukmeister @zerax9
Thanks for the comments, I agree and I am not going to bother with trying to save it and will replace the battery.
I will remove it and see if it charges off the bike as suggested though.
The phone charger is getting routed through the Ezcan now, it was just a rush job to get it on the bike for the ride.
Tracker is an insurance requirement but I have left it longer without being on the battery charger and it has been a non-issue so I don't think that needs to be changed.

I have never had a battery die this dead, ever, in 30 years of riding (plenty of running jump starts though), let alone dying in such a short period of time (less than 3 weeks) it was charging good on the ride as I rode with the tyre pressure screen on the dash. I could understand if it was colder weather.

Is it a known issue with these BMW OEM batteries?

Anyway the Motobatt is £138 atm so will jump on that

I've just upgraded to the Motobatt battery... even though I had no trouble with the existing OEM battery (4 years old)... mainly as a precaution and partly due to loving the hybrid power of the new one... so far, so good.
