1290 GT

Looking for number two for us, waiting for a bargain 1050 for the Mrs and seriously considering keeping my 1190 a bit longer as in some ways I prefer it to the 1290 Adventure, and when I get a new bike for me I want to hang onto the 1190.

Fancied the GT deal, but I did not really fit on the bike at all, and even the Mrs reckoned it felt cramped for her (she is 6 foot tall) but even if she liked the riding position I know she would not like the rock solid suspension. A shame as it ticked so many other boxes (especially cost)

The 790s arriving in 18 will be great. I have both 690 Duke and Enduros and in many ways for the road you don’t need much more. I rode the Duke from the top to the bottom of France and over the Pyrenees earlier in the year and it was great.

I bought the GT because it was such a bargain but am now concerned about my license!

Now I’ve had time to have a good look at the bike and contemplate how to get everything on it for my obligatory 2-3 week annual holiday aimlessly riding around Eastern Europe I’ve come to the sad conclusion that it’s a bit lacking compared to the 1190 Adventure so what to do?

Well I’ve got the KTM panniers which would be fine for up to about 5 days but that still leaves me needing to potentially carry camping kit which inevitably needs a rack and then involves piling things into a 60l waterproof bag and strapping it onto the back or look at alternatives. My memory cells pointed out that I’d been impressed a few years ago when a couple of friends piled everything into Ventura luggage so I had a look, dithered for all of 5 minutes and ordered a rack, mounting kit and an AeroSpada VII tailpack which allegedly holds 51l. My theory (which my be flawed) is that I can use it with the pack over the pillion seat, strap a lightweight tent behind it and away we go.

I reckon I can stuff my fear factor gear like extra tools, spare gloves, first aid kit (really, I do take one), 12v pump and puncture repair kit plus cooking kit and food into the panniers where it can stay if I use a hotel and that’ll leave me with one bag plus the tent to carry into a hotel.

Only time will tell if I’ve made a wise decision but if I’ve failed miserably I’m sure I’ll find a mug punter to buy it all off me

Now I need a tank bag for passport, phone, eTab and maps. This had better be worthwhile :rob

Andy Where did you get the Ventura rack from and do you know the specific parts needed, as I already have 2 or 3 of the metal parts which holds the bag and a couple of bags, so potentially would only need the side rails. John

Thanks Andy, when you get the rack, perhaps you wouldn’t mind measuring the distance between the fitting sockets for me, on the rack, so I can see if mine suits, there’s no indication of a product number. Thanks john

I’ll do that and I’ll put a couple of photos up with everything assembled and the bag fitting facing forward and back plus with a tent on there if I can find one without exploring the deepest, darkest areas of our loft space.

Andy...have a look at the SW Motech tank bags. I had one on my GSA12 and now use it on the SA.

Fit securely onto a tank ring which fits on the fuel filler cap; bags are really well made with a variety of sizes available.

I have had lots of these over the last decade, still got two of them, these days with us having 2 bikes we just have smaller ones, handy for keeping cash / cards in for the motorway tolls, camera, bottle of water. Can also fit it in the top box alongside the crash helmet and sat-nav when we stop.

Mine have all been waterproof even without the waterproof cover fitted.

Well that’s saved me asking if they’re waterproof. I spent years getting pissed off by Bagster tank bags that either left everything wet or had the cover over them making anything in the map pocket invisible so I don’t want to go back to a tank bag that turns into a fish bowl.

I’ve been using an Enduristan bag that’s adjustable between about 11 and 16 liters and has proved to be 100% waterproof even in torrential rain but it’s not going to be a good fit on the GT. I might mess about with the straps a bit more and see if it’ll sit in something resembling a useable position before I put it up for sale but if that proves a waste of time I’ll go for an SW Motech one.

Try Jim Aim Braintree there still advertising them! They had a couple left before xmas.

Tank bag update: a bit of patience has seen me fit the Enduristan bag on my GT so I’m feeling quite pleased with myself because I know I can shove anything in there and know it’ll stay dry no matter what the weather.

Have you tried....

AMS in Tewsbury
DMC in Birmingham?
Or a bit further afield
Premier bikes. Didcot.

I have purchased 1290's from all three. (Doesn't mean I have three bikes)

All dealers deliver for a little over £100

Google KTM Dealers UK, jot down their phone numbers - and pick up the phone?

Start with the ones closest to your home.

Al

How did we manage without Google to give us all this valuable information?

I know, we used to buy MCN as soon as it hit the shops on a Wednesday morning then phone until we found what we wanted or we waited until the next week and tried again ;)

What sat nav you guys got with the gt .....I like the 395lm and the 595lm but thinking the screen will be to big to fit to the bracket that ktm do 🤔
