1290 SA S review

Only advantage I can see on the GS is the pillion comfort - and maybe the shaft drive assuming it will outlast a KTM chain and require less maintenance. But is costs more (and a lot more taking into account the deal I got on a "leftover") has a lot less power (further reduced by aforementioned shaft) carries more weight and requires more frequent / more expensive servicing.

Would never seriously consider a Ducati myself, I am sure they are great to ride but put off by the servicing costs and problems experienced by mates.

The Japanese are not doing anything I like the look of at the moment, even if I did not want another adventure bike I would probably want the SD GT instead - as well of would work even better if I had the cash.
 
Hey Nutty, let me know what ya think after your sedate test ride and remind me what you ride now by way of comparison. Last time I visited the forum you were on a GS or was it a Honda 90. Been across to Ducati MTS, S10000000XR and Africa Twin myself but test riding the 17 GS the morrow.

Test road the Adv. S yesterday and it was surprisingly good (my last KTM was a 690 Duke). Fuelling spot on, gearbox very good other than neutral and 1st to 2nd on occasion going to neutral but thats fixable with longer gear lever for me. Ergo good with relatively low footpegs.

Engine delivers ballistic grunt but mirrors vibed at high revs......mpg 42 with a mix of thrashing it and pootling with missus riding shotgun, she did not like lack of room but first bike with still air for pillion.

Good balance and easy sure roadholding. Suspension seems OK and ride very smooth but Ducati more impressive but that may be about familiarity.

Engine vibes at some rev ranges but its a V twin .....

The rider screen thingy is the future. Very clear, easy to read and access. Never did master the MTS settings. It is a brilliant feature and I can see satnav on there in the near future, Bosch wont resist it.

Will let you know. The Honda 90 has to go.:rob:D
 
Anybody know which dealer has a bike i can sit on (1290 S) in the south east.?

I would recommend Crescent in Verwood without reservation, it is not that far from Chichester and there are some decent test routes around there.

I believe their 1290S demo will be on the road next week, so you can do better than just sit on it :aidan

I don't normally watch his stuff, but watched that. He seemed to like it.

Goodness me, haven't been on the site for bloody weeks and weeks!

However ... I test rode a 1290S yesterday and ..... Nice! very nice! So nice that I'm afraid Cato has to go! So a 1290 should be in the garage soon! (not actually signed any paperwork yet but it's all in the pipe line ..)

And there we have the reason why I won't have a 1290 for a day. I know I'm weak and blowing a load of cash on a new bike might mean I have to work all year rather than having a few months off after summer.

I don't mind having to ride a 2 year old 1190 for a few thousand miles rather than go to work 😀
