1290 SA S review

.... S !

Andy, The acid test is always getting back on your own bike after a test ride !

And if i'm honest, I spanked Cato home and it's still a blinding bike. I most certainly didn't get on it after the demo ride and feel disappointed.

For me there are two reasons for the change, firstly I'm on PCP and within the next few months I've got to either do another deal or pay off the balloon payment, so I may as well do another deal, and secondly I'm just not doing the off roading that I thought I would. Cato has had a good bash at it (local trails, a few events like the Taffy Dakar) but I shan't take it (properly) off road anymore.
So with that said, I don't need that big 21/90/90 up front. I actually quite miss a 17 or 19 front for road riding and that's probably the biggest difference in real world riding between the two bikes.
The 21 front is great for back B roads and really soaks up poor road surfaces, but yer just can't stick it into a corner like you can with a fatter 17/19.

What I did notice (if it makes you feel better!) is that the manual WP suspension on the 1190 is still bloody good and arguably (if it's set up well) better than any electronic suspension. The one thing that really put a smile on my face on the way home from the test ride was that suspension.

The other thing for me is that it would appear (dealer is 90% sure but will confirm) that the luggage is transferable, and that I can probably transfer my wings exhaust too. So i won't need to 'start again' with farkles and pipes and all that jazz. (Even Rosy's lowering foot peg hanger things will transfer over).

So same monthly budget, but new bike. :thumb2

103 miles on my pushbike today Nutty .... :D

It felt much more linear, but only had it for an hour and didn't go mad. The bike was still on its running in rev limiter but even sticking within that you get this sense that there is a beast within it!
Very very smooth! That was my immediate first impression - third gear roll ons for a big twin very smooth!

Yes I hear what you're saying. When they first got it I asked to go out and they said no .. it needs at least 100 miles on it, and they were pretty insistent on that.

If mine was on a PCP I'd view things differently but it's not and because I went self employed under a year ago it'd be a giant leap to dispose of the required amount of ill gained loot this early in the game.

I'd buy an S as well so don't let the hippie be abusive :D

The dealer called, my bike is being delivered tomorrow afternoon. :JB

Test rode the R today . Breathtaking agility/power combination.
Snags are , (fucking ugly headlight/ chain / no integrated Sat Nav/uncertain resale values / wanky behaviour of the KTM dealers )... but certainly more exciting than the admittedly dull but capable R1200GSTB. Pondering the purchase, will decide later in the week.

Hey up Staurt Watson, how's it hanging?

Have you got any pictures? I remember how much you love pictures :)

Anyway, how's the move to Scotland and new career as a Pharmacist going? I have to say I admire your bravery in such a change of career at your time of life :clap

I don't mind having to ride a 2 year old 1190 for a few thousand miles rather than go to work

I still have to go to work even if I keep the 1190, but keeping it means I can go on a few more long trips and I would rather be riding my 1190 in the Alps / Ardennes / Harz than a new 1290 around the block because I cannot afford to go any further.

The KTM has not done badly in the depreciation stakes in the first year due to the big discount when I bought it, but as the new one is £3k more than I paid for mine it means the upgrade price is way more than I am willing to pay as my bike is still in A1 condition and under warranty - somewhere between 2 and 3 years I will be up for a deal on the 1290 (or whatever replaces it)

I also prefer to pay cash so I don't have the issue of a balloon I cannot afford tempting me into a new bike, plus with the trade in I am normally only reaching for about half the new bikes price each time I swap, timed correctly with a big service and pair of tyres looking it tends to be easy enough to justify £5k every 3 years to get a fresh bike and new warranty.

New bike arrived today. Having a look around, it looks well put together. I've fitted a few bits, so now time to get those running in miles on.:beerjug:
