12GS turns over, dies pos not fuel pump controller

No. I keep putting the battery on the Optimate, cranking it until it flattens and hoping that the engine will come back to life.

Why do such a thing you might ask? Well, there have been signs it is getting nearer to life like it actually ran properly for 3 seconds yesterday. So I will try again this eve.

I also havent had a chance to try anything else or delve any deeper, very busy.

I will keep the interested posted if anything develops or I get an answer. I'll rig around a couple of people for ideas tomorrow if no luck tonight.

Have you tried putting another gallon of fuel in just to try and eliminate that?

Progress....

Last time I tried I had my hand on the throttle and it came to life for a second. With that clue and a full battery this eve found it will start and run on a partial open throttle.

I have done the TPS reset now a few times and it doesn't seem to make a difference.

It will start and run really rough but but on both cylinders and not an overrun as if the throttle cable trapped (aware of what thats like as done it before...).

It will rev through the range but sounds awful and shakes real bad. If I let revs drop below 2k it dies.

It is also shooting flames out the exhaust pipe, other than that nothing seems to be getting any more hot than expected, and the heat seems even to both cylinders.

Running rich? TPS not resetting? Cat plugs?

Must emphasise this is an out of the blue problem. Running ok, then wont start, now this. So even though throttle bodies etc may be out of balance can't see they would suddenly go this bad.

Not a fuel injector disconnected / not fully seated, on the basis of the running as if the throttle cable is unseated? All the spark plug leads on ok? Just some thoughts :o

:thumb2 will check all this tomorrow eve. Also going to chuck some more fresh fuel in.

Will post up findings of this ongoing saga tomorrow if I get anywhere (or not).

Sounds like this thread from over the pond, check out post no. 6. Anyone near you that you can 'borrow' a TPS from to try it?

Yes it does doesnt it, esp GBs post:
''Mine did the same thing, the only way to keep it running was to keep the throttle open, even when shifting.. then on my way down to the dealer, it started to backfire like crazy and I had flames shooting out of my exhaust.. TPS was replaced, plug and play.''

I'll investigate, thanks.

I had a similar problem in Hammamet Tunisia last month, checked sparks by the roadside etc, finally removed the injectors, cranked the motor, - no fuel, end of story, flight back to Ulm here in Germany, bike took 4 weeks. The dealer replaced the fuel pump booster?! fixed, he knew this, quote, "had quite a lot of these failed recently" now ok

Mr Rabbit.. could it be the actual fuel pump rather than the common relay problem, as u actually get a clunk rather than a wurr, it would indicate that power could be getting to the pump but the pump itself is 1. fecked, 2. blocked, or 3. stuck due to the lay up.

Is the pump in the tank? or outside somewhere (i'm traveling so no manual with me) its its outside my be worth taking it apart and making sure moving part actually move.

good luck

Thanks. I am getting fuel, plenty of it by the looks so I think the pump is ok, unless something odd is happening there like the flow is intermittant.

MH, I think the TPSs are the same, I am just loathe to use a parts donor when the donor is running fine.

Update, forgot to post

Only polite to post what it was....

TPS knackered. Should have guessed this by what happened when I tried removing it, i.e. not much difference.

So at least it wasnt something 'simple' I had done stupidly.

So well done ST247 for spotting it!

Only about £80.

The punchline to this story is I went into Bath rd with this

and came home with this, and a nice cheque :D

Yes, JohhnyBoxer's bike..........nearly but not really.

The GS is in Bath rd if anyone is interested in a much loved one :D. They have mullered it though as most of the best farkles have gone :nenau

Thanks for the info regarding the fix, if mine misbehaves the same way in future I will now know what to change. :thumb2

Your old 1200 looked really nice, are you sure you've done the right thing by selling? The 1200's are still a superb road bike. I'd have been tempted to see how the 1200 behaved with a new TPS fitted, its failure is probably just 'one of those things' and I suspect the bike will be fine now unless it was a real 'Lemon' beforehand.

Hi there,
Am I sure I did the right thing? Of course not, it could be a big mistake!
But no I have had it from new (05) it was great bike and had done some good trips on it, bit I hadn't used it for getting on for a year as was focussed on trails and they getting a bit gnarly for my ability and size on the 12, so it would be a once a year use for me as an adventure tourer.
I only took it in to get it fixed so it could be put up for sale, the X-C was there and that was that. I fancy trying a middleweight dirt oriented bike for a bit and then see what comes up in a year of so KTM adv wise perhaps, or hopefully keep the X-C.
I guess the bottom line is I have no application for an adventure tourer anymore, as someone else put it.
But yes, it was a great bike, I loved it, but it was time to move on.
