12v accessory power wiring help plz

I'd like to wire my kenwwood radio bike to bike comm onto my bike so i dont have to mess with batteries. I already have the pos/neg power lead but dont want to wire it straight to the battery as ive done with a few others things as it'll be live when bike ignition switched off.

I know you can wire it into the rear light but i have already done this with a few small leds. How many things eg gps mount, radio etc could i do it like this without overloading the wiring?

So my idea it to either wire a toggle switch into the radio/gps mount wiring or get a relay.

but knowing nothing about electrics and have no idea how to wire it myself or where to get parts from so ive been looking on ebay and wondered if these would be suitable or have you any better suggestions?

To be honest for the current you're going to be drawing a relay is overkill. The switch you're looking at will do the job technically but you need to cosider where you're going to physically locate it. If you have a maplin close to where you are you may find a more suitable switch.
With wiring, you need to look at what you want to do. If it's a switched feed from a permanent live then a lead from the battery should do (although I'd reccomend a fuse between battery and switch as close to the battery as possible). Otherwise you're talking about cutting into the loom which is a perfectly reasonable and safe thing to do but you need to know what you're doing. It's better not to cut the wire of the loom but instead to wrap your feed wire around the exposed wiring and I cannot reccomend enough solder at this point. That way you minimise the risk of corrosion to the wiring in the loom and subsequent failure of the circuit you tap into.

I would be careful with wiring things to the rear light circuit - there have been reports of people destroying the ABS unit by doing this. A very expensive thing to do.

Why not wire the radio to the accessory socket? If you want a permanent connection, rather than a plug, connect to the wires at the back of the socket, perhaps.

Bit of care needed here. If you are intending to bike power a Kenwood TK3101 you will need to reduce the voltage. Can't remember exactly but I think the radio only takes around 7volts.
I managed to get a suitable unit made for my bruvs GSA. Poking 12-14 volts into the radio will almost certainly fry it.
Unless of course you are running it through a Autocom unit.

7.4 volts to be exact ... as gazza said ... it will fry unless you reduce the voltage or wire it through an Autocom ... a pro 7 sport (kit 6) with leads to power the transmitter and provide a PTT and power would be the best way forward as the TK3201 has no VOX function...
Autocom part 95 is a replacement dummy battery that incorporates a power lead that plugs into the grey aux lead from the Autocom...
Not a cheap way forward though...

thx for the info so far but what i need to know is how do i connect the 3 pin toggle switch? I always put a fuse in-line with anthing extra i wired into a bike.

this is why i thought about getting relays so everything i want to wire to bike switches on/off automatically with ignition. So Can anyone recommned a relay that will do the job and how to wire it into my bike?

The toggle switch will connect its common pin to one of the other pins in one postition and connect the common pin to the other pin when you adjust the switch position. So yes you only need to use two pins for a simple switch circuit. (One pin must be the common pin though)

Piggy-back

I had a similar query and was directed to a much more simple solution; basically you piggy-back the horn fuse (5A) to give you a live feed that is switched by the ignition key; much better than fitting an extra switch.

There is a picture on here that explains the process but I can't find it at the mo; i'll keep looking !
