anyone any ideas how to turn the 1200gs power socket in to a normal size one?
Well it is a normal size one. 
If you mean a cigarette lighter socket you can either buy or make an adaptor cable. Powerlet, for example, do one.

my tomtom rider 1 car cable is the fatter cigarette kind and if i can find an adapter to fit the bm smaller size then i do not need to cut in to the loom or have extra wires from the battery. did i mention that the tom tom cradle is faulty and there 35 quid to replace, ergo a cheap way of keeping the sat nav working is what i want.
Be careful some of those new power adaptors for GPS etc are actually voltage reduction

Anything that can be charged via a computer and USB cable is only operating on 5v......so GPS's car lead will contain a step down from 12v to 5v.
I rigged up a 12V Cigarette Lighter type socket on my left handlebar. Used an old Maplins 12V extension lead I had lying around. Wired up directly to the battery via an inline fuse. Also made a BMW sized one for the right handlebar. Placed a BMW Socket (courtesy of Jaythro) inside an old 12Gauge shotgun Cartridge, before mounting onto handlebar

I bought a full size socket from a motor electrician for about 3 quid complete with a plastic cap and spade connectors. This weekend I will remove the OEM and re-wire with the spades and fit. The hole will need to be reamed out a little to take the new piece and I anticipate the whole job will take 10 mins. I did the same on my old 1150 and it worked a treat.

do BMW sell an adaptor to go from OEM size thats under the seat to 'standard' car type ciggy?
Not that I know of.
What you can sometimes find, usually in Continental motorway service shops, are assorted gizmo's suitable to plug into the Din sockets, as they are used on some trucks.
The home made conversions are easy enough to do and you can't break anything (unless you try really hard)

Thanks, its really annoying its not standard, i like its position, and i don't even have a tank bag yet, but when i do i want to run a lead from there to the bag, and power my iPaq. Got a power adator for it, which i use in the car as well but its standard size.
Might have to run a second lead, i like the handle bar position for plug

Running an extension to a socket on the beak is really useful if you intend to run power into a tankbag.
It's easy to do. There lots of threads on UKGSer on the subject. Or. if you are not confident, get your local BuMW man to do it for you.

If you are not going to use a GPS, you could utilise the spare electrical spur that is hidden away behind the headstock / oil cooler.
