150 miles between fuel stops

Average mpg's are right about 39-41 at normal riding speeds. Getting a little throttle crazy will drop the mpg's into the mid 30's.

Ehhh.......no! You're making the mistake of mixing units. 1 US gallon = 0.83 UK gallon. So, for example 32 mpg US = c. 40 mpg UK and 40 mpg US = c. 50 mpg UK.

maybe it is the trip computer...

156 miles, light on with showing 40 left, 15.6l to the absolute brim upright. 22l tank isnt it? so 6l left.....so 42mpg used but only 30mpg left...

think I'll strap 5l to the back and run ot dry, see how far it really goes, need to ensure I can get 200 miles between stops for touring

I'd say 200 miles is no problem, as long as you're keeping below the ton and out of towns.

Let us know how it goes, I've been tempted to do the same to find out how far that 20l really goes (or is it 20->22Ls?).

As an example I filled up on Sunday (usual, fill to the pump click off, then carry on until I can see petrol in the filler neck); did 100 miles of 50-90 with some high (for a 1200GS) three figure roll-ons for short bursts.

Yesterday, did A/B/unclassified roads, 30-90. Computer said 'panic' 0 miles at 170-180ish. This is where having a GPS with fuel stops makes this slightly less stressful. By the time I reached the next petrol station the trip read 195, 18.8L went in. By my reckoning I had another 15-20 left in, maybe more?

This means the fuel guessitmator is some ~40-50miles off base. Ah well, its not a big deal, as much as the Yellow and flashing Fuel text wind me up. Still at least its not doing what my last BMW did to me: computer says 5 miles (and I'd run it past 0 before); 4 miles to the next petrol station. Bike ran out at 3.5 miles...bah...win some, lose some.

What I like to know is how much fuel does the 1200GS tank actually hold?

This is the 2008/09 model.
