Went with a mate of mine on his brand spanking ZX-10R to Switzerland for ten days last week. The bike was perfect for the full ten days, both loaded up with serious amounts of camping gear and without gear for the rideouts.

On the ride there it was only going into reserve at 230miles showing 50 to go....I was very impressed. That was loaded with panniers generally around French D roads.

Around Switzerland and the passes the ZX-10 could not match either the handling or drive out of the corners. I think my mate (and me!) were quite surprised. The bike inspired total confindence on all but the most dubious (liquid overbanding in Italy) of road surfaces.

The bike also cruised back at 100mph down the Autoroutes with no problem.

I came back totally relaxed, my mate on the sportsbike needs a week of physio.

AND for the record:

-It consumed 900ml of oil over 2200 miles.
-The topbox didn't fall off
-The BMW luggage didn't leak
-The tank range was superb
-The servoed ABS'd brakes were fantastic i.e. in the wet down the cobbled St Gothard pass
-The remus pipe didn't melt anything
-The tobinators meant NO buffeting
-It didn't break down once

Finally, on the continent, nobody looked at the ZX10, whereas my bike had many admirers.....much to my mates displeasure
:)

Of course, the most refreshing part was the roads:

Nice pic. I've done exactly the same road with 3 mates on Aprilia RSVs. Stonking bit of tarmac. So good we did it about 8 times. There were some cyclists honking their way up it at the same time (as in your pic) and they were getting well fed up with us going past them avery 5 mins or so - hugely funny.

Glad the Tobinators worked :D

Glad you enjoyed it, a long European tour is on my 'to do' list. The roads in that picture look like heaven, real 'GS Country'.

I had a similar experience riding back from Ireland through North Wales fully fuelled and luggaged, having done over 2k around the emerald isle. Me and a mate left an R1 miles behind us on the Welsh 'real world' roads without even trying. Brilliant on fuel, quick and comfy, amazing handling, tons of luggage. The bloody bike does it all, I love it. Respect to BMW for such a quality design.

Nice picture GS Monkey, 2 questions,
1where is the road in the picture? and
2 how did you post such a big picture? widest thing I've seen on the Forum!

That bit of road is the Oberalppass Pass out of Andermatt, which is the village you can see at the bottom. It was certainly the easiest of passes, although my favourite on the trip was the Sustenpass.

The picture is done by stitching three photo's together. If you look, the van assending the hill is shown three times. Its posted on an external site, so there is no size limit.
