To those with more knowledge than me, that's most of you( crawl)

What are the gearbox options for a 2001 R1150GS

Getting more noise around town from mine than I would like, really weird though that's it's fairly quite after a run.

Bike has always preferred to do a 1000 miles to 10 but now it does seem to make more noise on a short run.

Any info would be good.

What sort of options do you want to know:) You can send the gearbox away and have all the bearings replaced for about £300-350. Try a different oil and see if that makes a difference too.

Sorry to hijack this thread a little, but what oil do people recommend for the 1150 gearbox ?

Do a Google search for Anton Largiader, who's based in Virginia USA. His website will tell you everything you need to know about oil head gearboxes, their ratios and applications...

Mike O thanks for that, looks like a lot of the gear sets are the same but the cases are different. Will take a bit more research I think.

Err - no.

All the 1150 cases are the same (except in colour) - there are two main types of 1150 gearbox, the earlier 'heavyweight' and the later 'lightweight' - the internals of which cannot be interchanged. Other than that the only difference is gear ratio sets, of which there are three choices

1. Low first and low top - fitted to the 1150GS Adv as an option initially (although I think it came as standard later - it was standard from the launch in some markets, but not the UK)
2. Standard first and low top - fitted to the 1150GS Adv (& GS Sport IIRC)
3. Standard first and overdrive top - fitted to the 1150GS

These gearboxes were fitted throughout the R1150 range, with a variety of case colours and linked to a variety of final drives with different ratios.

What type of noise? Clunky or rumbling?

Mine was Rumbling, changed the bearings, cost me GBP35 all in.

Mike O, so if I understand you correctly something like a R1150RT gearbox would fit and work as it should when fitted to a GS.

Gearbox rumbles when hot around town, but seem fine on a run

I would just swap out the bearings or what ever needs doing, but only really have enough time to swap over a complete unit as the bike is used nearly every day

There are all sorts of noises from an air / oil cooled boxer engine and box, are you sure it's the box? ... have you drained the gearbox oil and checked for debris? best be sure of the source of the noise first, some are "Normal" :D

I have done quite a lot of miles on this and have had a lot of different noises last one being a loose push rod end, but am fairly sure it's from the box. Dropping the oil tonight, should have better idea after that

Thanks for all the replays.

My '02 R1150GS had a very loud rumble from gearbox, especially at idle in neutral with clutch engaged. Quieter with clutch disengaged.
I noticed oil was dark when I drained it. Rather than let it blow up, I got a new box fitted. Sore financially.
If you can get a reconditioned box, that would be my recommendation. You could change the clutch incl. pressure plate and thrust bearing while in there....

Make sure you can undo the filler bolt before you undo the drain bolt - :thumby:

As above lots of options if required - start with an oil change and checking for nasty metal bits in the old oil. Change oil, repeat a few hundred miles later.

If your gearbox is knackered you could rebuild, buy a reconditioned gearbox or take an Ebay pot luck special.

Options as follows:

R1150GS
R1150R
R1150RS
R1150RT
R1150 Rockster

IIRC:nenau

As per Mike's post above, the gear ratios and colour of the gearbox (Silver/Black) could be wrong but it will get you going.

If I was on the look out for an 1150 gearbox I'd be looking for a long 6th gear - AKA 'E' or overdrive. Of the 3 1150's I've owned only my first had the long top gear and it made motorway cruising much more relaxing.

Good luck:thumb

Mine rumbled big time, pull the clutch quiet, did the bearings overnight/ a weekend pretty much... will post the other site one if I can... http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=95924.0

I have a six speeder, silver, which I bought used from an inmate here in Scotland when I thought the 1150 was going to be a permanent keeper. He was using the bike as a sidecar tug and the high 6th was too high. Bought as all good but never needed to fit it. Let me know if you are interested. Seem to remember the donor had done ~24,000 miles.

OK that's very strange, just dropped the oil out, although not the cleanest it was not full of metal and even hunting around with a magnet found nothing in the box or oil.

Got to head out for a 150 mile round trip in a while. Will see what's like after that.
