2008-11-23 - Event - Salisbury Plain Enduro

so did you get a bollocking for being on the course today??? :D

I saw a big group of riders out there and a warden trying to track them down, think I only narrowly avoided a talking to :o

i see its chalkpit hill, tidworth, is it easy to find?

Tidworth is, Swindon > Marlborough > A346 south > A338... you'll pass Collingbourne Kingston and Collingbourne Ducis keep going on the A338 after you've left Collingbourne Ducis you'll pass a stagger junction intersecting the A338, Chalkpit hill should be the first tank crossing after that junction - it should all be sign posted...

and no Im not really awake at 5 in the morning...

:thumb Great day, Started out Wet then cleared after an hour into a lovely sunny day.

It was all is was ment to be HARD, not sure how many laps I did, but I managed the 3 hours, and a sready pace, great support from Mrs Bakes and Mrs Sid, and a few faces from here.

Oh Jeremy ment to say the T.V still going well.

Some photos must appear soon

Huge respect for Steve and Sid, this was hard core riding on a very slippery, unforgiving surface. The temp read -1 at the 10am start and then the rain and sleet started. Spoke to a brave soul on a tricked up HP2 but only saw him on one lap. The tank tracks at Tidworth were deep and steep and a great place to view the race.

For Sid's first enduro on a new bike, he certainly did well.

Jeremy

Sorry I couldn't make it. I wimped out :augie There was snow on the ground here at 7am so waited until 9am and left on the bike. It rained really heavily all the way to Hungerford and beyond, and as it did not look like clearing I decided to come home again with very wet feet.

As was stated very wet, very very slipery on the chalk but the weather did clear and the grip was there, I did the full 3 hours and managed 5 laps.

The Tank tracks where very deep and if not careful caught you out, but in all told a cracking day, but at the end of the day you knew you had been riding 3 hours as my arms and shoulders were sore and stiff

My missus took a few picc's will post later on

How many laps did you guys do??

you did better than me. opened curtains, saw weather, went back to bed :)

Excellent day! but unfortunately I have the privilage of being amongst the few who got a DNF - well done to all those who did, there was some fantastic riding out there!

bit gutted I didnt get one lap in, but having dumped the bike a fair few times I felt more of a hazard than a participant ;)

Well done to Steve, Sid and Richard! I'm very impressed!

btw, who is Mark Andrew?

Cookie, I had similar thoughts, Steve I will try and get down next time. :thumb2

Great day, just got home after 4 hour drive with detour to visit Proff in Exeter hospital (I'll do separate post for that).

Never felt so knackered in my life. :)

Huge thanks to many people. Firstly to Bakerman and Mrs Bakerman (Becky) for letting us crash out at their place on Saturday night. As soon as we arrived, Bakes gave me a choice of (1) Stay in house and watch X Factor with all the girls or (2) join him working at a Hog Raost for a 30th Birthday party. We left the girls to several bottles of wine after Steve told me that he abstains from alcohol for 7 days before event. Helped him at party and he even got me doing the washing up afterwards!

Woke early this morning to sound of hail stones banging on velux window. Not slept well due to nerves. Steve insisted we had bowls of porridge to set us up. Went out to start Discovery and found totally flat battery. Mrs Bakes managed to jump start us and we were finally away.

Got to event and realised I'd left my jacket hanging up in his hall. At this point he must have thought I was a total liability. :)

So cold at start that I had lost all feeling in my fingers.

Here's the first pic of me "thanking" Bakerman for getting me into this:

As noted above some nutter had decided to enter on a HP2. Mucho respect but not entirely suitable for the conditions:

Somebody entered an even heavier vehicle:

Big thanks to all those that offered help and encouragement, David Hall for helping pick up bike on last lap and looking after the Mrs of me and Bakes. To Jeremy for his words of support and all the others from on here.

My KTM 300EXC was perfect bike for conditions, very pleased I bought it. By 4th lap I was just getting used to power delivery and handling as it was first time I'd ridden it since buying it a week ago.

Great event. Going to have a long relaxing bath and drink copious wine to ease the aching muscles.

had a great day despite the bad start weather wise......

Did the 3hrs and completed 6 laps which is what I was aiming for so quite pleased with that.

No wonder I didn't get a photo opportunity then.
Well done to those that finished - not very nice for the first hour or so - so sat in the van and spectated from there :)

:D well I was a bit more successful with a camera today, I've uploaded them to flicker, there are a couple of good shots of Dave and his son (courtesy of Mrs Lan), a couple of Steve, a good one of Richard and a selection of others - they are a bit big, but if you like them feel free to grab a copy.
