2008 1200 GS whats different?

Does anyone know if my old Hepco Becker bars (from my 2004 1200GS) would fit my 2008 1200GS ?
Thanks in advance for your help.

I think the handlebars and upper triple are different, 08 bars have less rise in the bar but upper triple has higher brackets. I've been fitting Magura X lines for an 08 to my 07 and find its about 30mm lower using the 08 bar but 07 upper triple.

Hmmm... I want to check something before posting the list of items needed to move Touratech headlights from a 04GS to a 08GS...
I'll post on monday.

In order to move my Touratech Headlights (Xenon on the left, fog on the right) from a 04GS to a 08GS, I was given this list, checked in Germany (hope they did not forget anything)

  • 1 x 05-040-1840-0 bracket additional headlight left side for BMW R 1200 GS + ADV from 2008, 70,-EUR.
  • 1 x 05-040-1839-0 bracket additional headlight right side for BMW R 1200 GS + ADV from 2008, 70,-EUR.
  • 1 x 05-040-1542-0 bracket (left side) for control unit xenon-headlight, for BMW R1200GS from 2008. 20,50 EUR.
  • 2 x 05-380-0012-0 elastic buffer black 12mm SJ 5012 (3M), 1,03 EUR.
  • 1 x 10-982-0500-1 nut self-locking M5 V2A, 0,18 EUR.
  • 1 x 10-738-0514-1 screw M5x14 V2A
  • 1 x 05-390-0011-0 O-Ring 50x2mm EPDM UV-resistant, 0,95 EUR.
  • 2 x 10-134-0500-1 ring washer M5 V2A

I will not be able to confirm if something is missing before September though... Check with your Touratech office before ordering anything ;)
Also, these are spare parts, meaning they will not find them in their extranet, they simply will have to use the parts numbers when ordering.

Spoke Rims

1st post i know, but have been a long time lurker. G'day from down under etc, etc.

I have a set of spoke rims from a 2005 GS. Am wondering if they will fit a 2008 GSA with the optional TPM fitted?

If yes, are there simply add-on parts I can fit to the 2005 rims to give me TPM functionality?

Thanks advance to the collective brains trust out there.

Cheers
Shane.

Welcome to the collective Shane :thumb

To fit your 2005 rims and retain TPM you will need to have the sensors which are part of the valves on the new bike transfered over.

The sensors are linked to the bike and without them you'll have warnings galore, its easy to do for a competent tyre fitter.

Enjoy the new bike :thumb

Hi
"its well good on ya to do that little report" I did not know about the horn relocation! Thats it I will have a horn and a canbus lead to sell!

I had a 2007 GSA and I now have the 2009 GSA is there not a different gearbox! as its sure rides like it is? and also the handlebars position and headstock seem far nicer? Then there is the LED indicators and rear light I guess?

Thanx look forward to more info....

Well my 2008 has been changed for other bikes since I pulled the initial report together but your right the engine and gearbox are different from previous models as are the handlebars.

As for the horn and can bus lead can you might be able to relocate it depending on which horn you have.:thumb

Thanks for the info :clap. Might get onto Motorworks (UKGSer's banner) again for the bits. What a top crew they are to deal with :thumb. Bought some goodies from them last week - the debit on Visa only beat the goodies by ONE day. Fantastic.

Forgive me for saying this - but, it's a bit cooler here today - only 30 degrees C instead of the 40 we've been having regularly of late. I've never seen snow - wonder what its like ??:hide

Hi Shane,
BMW configured the tyre pressure system to function with two sets of wheels, or 4 sensors, so there's no need to move your sensors about. BMW created this possibility because some bikers own both alloy and spoked wheels. More info in the manual, and extra sensors from your dealer.

My later model (Sept) has the GPS electric pick up socket behind the radiator and LED indicators, so I guess they are constantly changing.

Does anyone know what makes the 08/09 10mm higher than the previous model ? Thicker saddle/ different geometry / taller suspension ?

The saddle has a different shape : the middle is a bit higher and flatter, adding 10mm to the total hight.

An update.

Confirmed - the GSA can be programmed to receive info from a maximum of 2 sets of RDC units. Thirty minute job at the dealer.

Another matter though:
New rotors were fitted to my 2005 rims before they were fitted to my 2008 bike & new pads were fitted as well. In less than 1000 miles the near-side rotor had warped badly. Much examination later eliminated things such as sticking pads and the like.

However I did discover that the rotors are different. BMW R1200GS front rotors (I haven't checked the rear rotor) are a floating type. Pre-2008, the 'floating' is achieved via a sequence of washers (wave & flat) and spacers. 2008 onwards, the 'floating' is achieved by a rivet system permanently incorporated in the rotor itself.

I then purchased a pair of 2008 rotors (from Motorworks - great service for Int. customers) to fit to the 2005 rims and have had no problems in the subsequent 4000 miles of use.

Rivets -v- washers... does it make any physical difference? Yes. Fitted to the rim, the 2008+ rotor spacing is approx 3 to 5mm wider (measured from outside edge left rotor to outside edge right rotor).

Whether this spacing difference was the cause of the warped rotor, I can't say for certain, but I believe it was.
