Hi,

I'm looking for some info, help or advice from you lovely people out there in GS-land please.

My 2008 developed a horrible tappetity sound in the right hand side of the engine at the beginning of the week. I put it down to the it being a typical boxer noise and just being a bit rattly as I've had my GSA from new and know its little sounds. Thing is, it got a lot louder very quick (in a matter of hours). I know its to do with clutch/gearbox because when I pulled the clutch in, it went away.

Anyway long story short .... got recovered by BMW assist to the dealers, they've spotted it as a problem seen on some other GSA's and is to do with some sort of shaft from the engine which has cam's on it and springs in the gearbox. These are "thought" to be causing the problem. :nenau

Thing is, on other GSA's which displayed the problem, the gearbox has been replaced as a whole unit under warranty apparently. Admittedly they were about a year old and not 2 years. Mine is under warranty but they only want to pay for it to be repaired and not replaced !!

I've spoken to a few people and apparently there are some gearboxes out there on GSA's which are shall we say ... not as well built as others.

I just wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this problem and what happened? Should I push for a new gearbox or be happy with the "repairs"?? Its not a case of trying to scab as much as I can off them but more a case of ensuring I get a good solution.

I'm currently going for a new gearbox as I'm not happy that a 2 year old GSA should develop gearbox issues. But at the same time I don't want to be unreasonable in what I want as the dealers are fantastic and I know the guys in the workshop there would go for the best solution.

The bikes done 19400 miles, is a 2008, always serviced by the main dealer and is used every day.

Any help or thoughts would be appreciated as I miss my baby .... driving these car things just isn't the same

cheers :beerjug:

dont ask how i know but,how about a 2010 twin cam with just over a 1000 miles up it,the g box compleatly trashed, oil v dark grey and awash with bits.

Here we go again:blast.............Extended Warranty Claim v's BMW Goodwill

Ask the dealer to put in a goodwill claim to BMW for a whole new gearbox and input shaft....................that way you won't have to trouble the extended warranty people...................they will

A repaired gearbox should be better than a new one as long as the monkey repairing it knows his stuff. Hopefully, when he's in there he'll check all teh other internals and make sure it's OK.

TBH, not heard of any other 1200's with gearbox issues:nenau

Ah right - now this is something I didn't realise (which is my fault) :blast - I made the assumption that the BMW extended insurance was from BMW !! Sorry not being flippant just this now makes a lot of sense on the gearboxes being swopped out on the younger bikes and not mine. I'm basically dealing with a third party insurance company.

Excellent - where I was quite open to working with BWM before to sort this out, I'm now actually up against an insurance company purely interested in saving money but taking my hefty premium.

That something I thought about as well. At least I'll know for a fact that the box is in good nick if they have done the repairs. The guys in the workshop do know their stuff.

Just trying to see which is the best way to go forward on this one.

Aah, but the warranty is sold under, and backed by, the BMW banner so they will support it:thumb

If you had an insurance warranty from a different supplier, BMW would probably wash their hands with the whole thing.

As stated, there is nothing wrong with a repair instead of a new box. BMW tend to replace units instead of parts because its probably cheaper for them. This can be seen in the FD failures where in warranty they tend to replace the whole FD but out a bearing gets replaced. There isn't any real point in replacing a whole box just for one part but I see where you are coming from as well. My view is that if the person who does the work, knows what they are doing and cares about their work, you could easy end up with a better box as opposed to something that came of the production line, put together by someone who is bored because that's all they do and doesn't really give a.

Sounds like you're close to CW's. They'll look after you.

Why do refer to mechanics as "monkeys" please?? Its like calling a c**ns nig**ers
