I have just bought a 2008 GSA- I have noticed on getting the bike home that on the Exhaust side of the bike, behind the cyclinder head there is a black metal section of the engine, on my previous GS the engine was encased in plastics, but this area on the GSA is noticeably bare- have I got a panel missing? or is the GSA design just the bare black metal on the 2008?

A photo from other 2008 GSA owners could help me, the photo needs to be taken behind the boxer cyclinder on the exhaust side...please help

if you mean the starter motor cover, it's not fitted on 08 models for some reason.

Here's a blown up image from the BMW website

Its all down to cost and yes it looks crap without it. Thats why I own a 1150gsa:D

Guys many thanks...this site is great for answers! I thought the cover had fallen off somewhere (panic!)- Now I know its a cost saving exercise I can rest easy...The GSA is an awesome bike...shame the 2008 doesnt have the cross bar like the 07 but otherwise very happy indeed- thanks for your help

Because I am not a member :(

You can still post a link to an image even if you're not a member. That's what I did (not a member yet, but will be subscribing v. soon).

You do need some web space though (lots of ISP's give you a bit of space as part of your bband package) - just upload the image to your web space and then click on the little mountain icon to insert a link.

There should also be some free image repositories out there if you google "free image space" for example

I think you'll find that the starter motor bits could corrode behind the cover so on the latest engine (the '08 one) it was left off to prevent this.

It looks fine without the cover.

You own an 1150 because it has a starter motor cover?
Well said trev I cant understand some people

+1 :thumb2

I'd heard those rumours, so had a look behind mine. Looked like it had just come out of the factory. So cover back on and more happy riding.

Don't know if the cover will fit on the 08 bikes as I don't have one.

John you're becoming as neurotic as some of the other bretheren. ;)

Doesn't mummy give you pocket money on Friday's ?

Or is £12 more than 1 week to save up ?

Oi don't take the piss! :P

Besides I spent all my money getting my new GSA today & I don't get paid till monday - the cupboard is bare until then! :(

so you can afford a new GSA but dont want to keep the site running with a sub but expected someone to help you out? :blast

I don't think that's very fair on him - I didn't subscribe immediately because I wanted to check the site out and see if the people were helpful & friendly before subscribing to a site I might bore of quickly & never re-visit. I said hello and the folks were friendly, so I asked a couple of questions and the people were helpful. I shall be subscribing on Monday when I can be sure my payment will clear (I'm running on fumes this month).

To begrudge someone your advice because they have not registered yet is somewhat churlish, and unbecoming on a site where everybody, including yourself, have been so hospitable.

just my 2cents :)
