2008 rear ESA shock... shot! only 16K

Well as the title suggests I had a bit of a shock today. ( excuse pun)

I thought I would take the bike into work today as it was a nice day and after parking it up at work I had a few admirers looking over it and then I noticed this......

I initially thought it was some condensation from the link pipe but after sticking my finger in it..... see finger skids in picture It was definitely not water

It was oil from the rear ESA unit

The bike has 16100 miles only and I'm guessing having it parked up for 3 months with only occasional use has led the internal seals to dry out and crack

Thank heavens for the BMW warranty as I inquired about the price and it was £1034 plus VAT plus fitting so I'm guessing not a lot of change out of £2000

Its booked in at NOG for next Wednesday. It was not pleasant riding it home. Felt like someone was hitting my up the backside with a hammer when you hit a bump!

Oh well..... at least it didn't go in 6 weeks time when in Morocco

My 2009 was used pretty much every day for 2.5 years, then the rear shock went at about 38k

I'd probably secnd Steptoe's comments

Mine was out of warranty, so I went for some Wilbers

A much nicer ride & hopefully better quality!

My 2010 is going in for its Second rear ESA shock a week on Saturday... First was replaced about 11k miles or so, this one has survived to 28k. Thankfully I also have extended warranty, but what's annoying is that come 30k, suspension isn't covered, regardless if the shock fails just after 30k. Not sure either if the warranty replacement is covered by its own 12mo warranty, which to be honest, I would expect it to be.

I'm fairly sure an item replaced under warranty is only covered to the date the warranty expires unless you have made a contribution - in which case I believe it's 2 years.

I enquired today and the replacement shock will be covered under the original warranty until it expires.

In my case Oct 2013 as I had a 1 year used approved warranty.

I thought it would have a 2 yr one as it's fitted by bmw. However they said If I bought the part over the counter and fitted it myself it would have a 2 year warranty

I think for that reason alone the extended warranty looks a distinct possibility

When mine goes I'm having a Wilbers. Can't be arsed with stuff that falls apart in little over 1 year's riding.
My current shock has about 10K. The original failed about 27K replaced under warranty.
