2009 1200GS start issue

Quick update: the new starter arrived and fitted. The machine now springs into action on the first press of the button. Starts better than before.... Many thanks again for all the help :beerjug:
Next issue is the spongy clutch but I'll read through the forum first before commenting further

clutch runs funny fluid - and if you touch it seems to go more weird... happened on both my 2007 and 2011 GS

the seal seems to stick in the bore of the slave cyl (giving a spongy sensation moving slightly slower than it should) and does it more if you change the fluid to more fresh stuff of the correct type - stripped it down popped the piston out both, it and the the bore were like brand new - and the seal perfect - years down the line the funny feel has morphed and it started to behave like it did when new which makes no sense (feeling like it should)

if you look many seem to swap out the slave cyl and it magically behaves

even more strange the K1300's don't use the funny fluid (they take std brake fluid) but nearly ever other BMW bike does

Fuck off you MisInforming Ball Bag! BMW have changed specifications on Clutch fluid since late 03 -> 04 onwards with the launch of the 1200GS A warning is on the reservoir cap!

Read the Manual !! if in Doubt contact the dealership!!
Do not mix Mineral and DOT4 fluids

Do NOT use DOT5 brake and clutch fluid in your BM It is Purple (as a warning!) and a silicone based fluid which is "usually" not compatible with the rubbers in braking systems!

Just to confuse things even more DOT 5.1 (five point one) is back to being ethylene glycol based and DOT 6 the updated version

N.B. Your bike requires nothing more than DOT4 spec

There may be a TIB technical information bulletin updated on various things!

are you as stupid as you come across ? - that is EXACTLY why the first line of my post says it uses funny fluid !

Stupid is using the phrase "Funny" fluid! Showing for what you are!

Someone who wants to show what they know! "but" you haven't a fucking clue about what is going on! Your replies and responses to threads are simply at the level of AI

And your reply ?? Simply to "Go on the offensive!"

I don't care if you fuck off somewhere, but whilst you post misinformative posts here!

I will chastise lest you cost some poor fucker a bunch of money Because they haven't the experience to know when you are talking schite! WHICH IS VERY OFTEN!!

THere are 3 starters that will fit

Valeo - long body
Bosch - Short body
Bosch - Long body

The units supplied new now are the short body, to fit between the bellhousing and the flappy valve controller

There is no cover fitted to the short body motor if i recall,

The long body motor will fit (tight squeeze) but the cover will not fit

Arrow do an aftermarket unit, which has a higher cranking capacity if i recall
Do you know the Valeo part number that will fit? I find several supposed numbers, but find it hard to believe they will all fit.

I'm in need of a new starter soon, as my bike has some difficulty starting sometimes.

The one I fitted was Valeo SG2134OE (VAL TS12E30).

I do have bit of a continued issue though. Worked fine for about a week, then last Monday I pushed the starter button and nothing…. Same symptoms as before. I have power, starter relay clicks, no activity from the starter motor.
As I was off to work, I had to leave it and got a lift to work. Being away for the week, I had no opportunity to fault find so blindly ordered a new starter motor. Fitted it today and no improvement; same symptoms.
