Hi there, this is Mike O posting on Peter's computer.

We've been doing a service on Peter's 2009 R1200GS SE - the first done outside of a BMW dealer, as the bike's now out of warranty*.

The rear caliper was seized onto it's mount (apologies if the terminology is wrong - I don't know what the various parts should be called)...

This part, which has a nice, smooth pin on which the caliper should move...

...was seized on the rusty pin on the caliper, shown here. It took a considerable amount of time and effort to part the two pieces, during which time, unfortunately, the rubber bellows protecting the seized pin was damaged...

BMW list a picture of a repair kit (number 20 in this pic)...

...but there is no number 20 listed in the Max BMW on line fiche...

It's clear that the horrible rusty pin can be replaced, as it has an allen socket in the end...

...but unfortunately no part number is shown or listed for this as an individual item.

Has anyone had this happen? Is there a source for new pins - it seems daft to write a caliper off for the sake of a rusty pin (no - I'm not going to do that, but it could potentially happen)? Anyone know if the bellows are still available?

Can the rusty pin above just be unscrewed? I can't imagine it having heat sensitive threadlock as the caliper gets pretty hot (plus I don't want to be applying heat around the brake hose area).

Any help appreciated...

Cheers,

Mike

* I'm convinced this caliper has never been taken apart for a service - a shame when you think of what you pay for work at a BMW Main Dealer...:eek

Clean the pins with some fine emery cloth, and lubricate with a silicon based grease, not too much grease mind or the pin will hydraulic in the caliper and prevent float. Sure, get the part #20 seal kit and box it up......:thumb2

Update:

We've removed the rusty pin (came out without any drama) and have cleaned it up sufficiently to reuse.

Peter is going to strip the caliper down at least every 6k miles now that he's aware of the problem. He'd still like to source a replacement pin if anyone knows of a supplier - and we're still looking for the rubber bellows...

Have done the same, got my new bellows from motorworks after being told you could not get them .They come in a kit with brembo brake grease heres the part No BRA30312 not cheap but worth it .:comfort
Cheers
