Based on recent oilhead production development, you'd think that the current facelift is to tide the models over until a major development in 2009. Should be interesting to see what they come up with next.

Just hope the boxer is still up to the job with the new emissions / noise regs.

A friend who works for BMW in Germany told me that the Boxer engine DEFINITELY won't pass emissions for 2009 and that one option being looked at is for BMW to be supplied with the new LC8 1150 engine from the RC8 sportsbike that will feature in the 2009 KTM Adventure 1150.


As it makes about 40 more bhp and just the engine weighs about 40kgs less,bring it on !!

Should be good !!

In that case why would anyone buy the BM when the rest of the KTM is so much better?

No way - BMW are big enough to make their own engines, and certainly have the technology. What chances a water cooled boxer?

ZERO !!!!


They wanted to do it with the HP2 Sport but couldn't due to all the ancillaries etc.

My mate has an email which he is going to try and copy over to me which states the involvement between BMW and KTM.

Since they have changed a few things on the 2008 like the box and the S engine in it (IIRC?) I can't see them just doing that for a year really, but I know nuffink! Maybe a Chinese engrin?

2009 GS will have a diesel option with particle filter. More torque, same power, better milage to the gallon etc.

I have heard this from a friend of mine who's uncle knows a cleaner that does the main office of the managing director at the BMW plant.

That's probably because you don't appreciate boxers....

They tried, back in the 80's (?). That's what the introduction of the three and four cylinder bricks was all about, but there was so much customer pressure to retain the boxer layout that they designed the oilhead to replace the airhead.

I wouldn't have bought one without it, I don't suppose I'm alone.

Don't embrace change, just because you feel you have to.

The boxer is the iconic motorcycle for BMW and its what sets them apart from other manufacturers. Take the boxer engine away and they're on a par with the other mainstream bikes. I bought the GS largely based on format of the engine and suspension. Replace it with an IL4, V-twin, parallel twin or other configuration and I'm not too sure about the GS.

Maybe the Guzzi will sell well in 2009 - assuming they do a major facelift.

well as the F800GS is already stealing interest from the boxer engined bikes it seems most people are open minded, at the end of the day the V-Twin will still be a BMW and will still be a GS

its already been said that the 800 is a better suited bike for D/S and ADV type riding (but lacks a bit of grunt) so the new V-Twin will be more of the same..nice and light (compaired with the outgoing boxer engined GS's) with more torque and power for your two up adventures across the vast deserts of surrey,west sussex and oxford street

I emailed my friend who knows how to spell BMW about this. He tells me why I am getting more excited about the prospect of getting further shaftings from my local BMW dealer for servicing and losing huge amounts in depreciations whilst they continue to sing the tune that their bikes defy gravity

Lets see....the Kaboom weighs 199kg (same as the GS) and yet the engine alone weighs 40kg less? What is the hell is the frame made of....thick walled RHS and concrete?

If only this was true,i would love a diesel gs .Always wanted a diesel bike & if i ever found an engine good enough i would build my own .
