Is the oil filler really on the right hand rocker cover?
Is the oil filler really on the right hand rocker cover?

If the new DOHC engine is the same as the HP2S, then Yes

So one pours oil into the right-hand-side, then run around to the left - crouch down, wait and check the level, then run back round to the right-hand-side - pour in some more oil, then run around to the left............ repeat until correct oil level is acheived![]()
is an easy way to overfil
Thanks for confirming that.

So why would a GS rider bother with a 2010 bike with a more complex engine, that needs high octane fuel and costs more to buy and maintain - just to gain 5 hp that a GS doesn't really need

It's my fault...they always change things after I buy one..![]()

Looks like if you want the extra 5hp you will need 98.
From bmw's own spec sheet,
Fuel type, Unleaded super and premium, octane number 95-98 (RON) (knock sensor; rated output at 98 RON); optional extra 91 (RON) available

The 2010 GS does not use shims.
And if you get the 91 octane option, the engine actually produces 5 HP LESS (100 HP) than the '09 models.
