I don't know if the gearbox in the 2010 model is new or not so this question may be relevant to owners of earlier models also..... I'm not new to BMW bikes, this is my 7th so I am aware that the gearboxes can be a little agricultural but latest bike has a new trait (I think) which has only manifested itself 7-8 times in its 700 miles of use.
The bike feels like it has very briefly jump out of gear and then jump back in again, it happens in 4th and 5th gear. The first couple of times it did it I assumed it was a new bike and things were just bedding in but now I'm not so sure.
Anyone else experienced similar??????

I have a 2010 AGV and a 05 GS. The GS has an 07 gearbox due to a blow up. The gearbox casing is weak if you thrash them, I know of another high milage 05 that blew up like mine. the gear shaft exits the case on the clutch side dumping the oil.
No problem with the 07 box or the 2010. I think the gearchange is great on the GS range compares to the K's
If you are having issues get it back to the dealer.

I had an 06 GSA , and have now got a 2010 GSA...

...I never had the problem you're describing on my 06 Gs, and certainly not on my 10 Gsa, which has now covered 6,000 miles.

In fact the 2010 gearbox is a huge improvement on the older models.

I would recomend a visit to the dealers. :thumb2

My 2010 GSA's gearbox seems as slick as any, maybe a touch slower than some but the gears go in nice and smooth

I've found my gearbox to be so slick that just lately I've been a bit too light-footed when snicking it through the gears and a couple of times I've snicked it straight into neutral. :blast

Mine's done it about 10 or 12 times now, usually jumps out of 6th into 5th and sometimes from 5th to 4th. It's also jumped out of 6th and back into 6th.
(It's a 2010 Adventure)

Sorry to be the voice of doom here folks but I experienced this sort of thing for much of last year on my 2005 GS. Then at the end of Sept the gearbox let go completely.

A used replacement box cost over £800 at the start of this year.

I strongly suggest that people look at the extended warranty for peace of mind!

Yeah, I get something similar on my 2010 Adventure. Usually on (clutchless) up-shifts from 4-5 or 5-6. It'll either jump back down to the originating gear or jump out to a false neutral.

It was pretty bad for it before the first service but I mentioned it to the dealer and the gearbox felt way, way tighter when I got it back. It's done it once or twice since then but, to be honest, I think it's just a case of feeling the gear engage and stopping the lever movement there and then rather than carrying on and lifting it right up to the stop. If I stay positive with my control movements it never happens.

It's happening on my new GSA and it was happening on my 2006 GS as well. Sometimes it's pretty dangerous as you wouldn't expect a jump out of 4th or 5th gear. Probably it's a matter of how far you move the lever rather than a gearbox problem.

Not a single problem with my 08GS, 09GSA or 60 plate GSA

08 a bit clunky but thats all

09 a bit clunky but really smoothed out after 10k

60 smooth as you like right from the off, really nice :thumb2

If i did have a problem it would be straight back to the dealers.

I think you need do make firm assured gear changes its easy to get in the habit of lightly slicking through the gears, i am guilty of this and have missed a gear as a result but i have not had the bike jump out of gear once properly engaged.

Brand new (last saturday ) 2011 model adventure, 460 miles on the clock and it is doing this between 3rd and 4th , the box isn't fully engaging and will allow the bike to over rev and then spit back into the lower gear. (5 times today on a 70 mile run and I'm used to the old 1150's gearbox and do slow nad deliberate changes)

Is only happening when accelerating hard , I will mention it when it goes in for its first service on Friday and have it recorded as a concern. I'm away to Austria in two weks time and will be keeping a very close eye on it.

If it gets worse it will be going back to the dealers to be fixed.

08 gsa 3rd gear bearing went, fixed under ex warrenty

2010 gsa gearbox replaced as multiple bearings went(1000 miles),then bike replaced.

2010 gsa with 6000 miles all ok so far:D

The gearboxes are generally reliable (certainly when compared to FD's) and have got better with time.

It is most likely that jumping from a high to low gear is because it's not been engaged properly, especially if it jumps out straight after you've changed up.

The early 1200's sometimes had this problem due to the linkage and gear-lever bearing becoming stiff with time as corrosion and dirt got into the pivot. Essentially the linkage didn't return fully so the next change wouldn't shift the selector properly into the detent. A stripdown of the lever and greasing usually cured the issue. I'd suggest that a tight linkage may also be the cause on some new bikes and ought to improve with time as the mechanism loosens up. Until then a firm change is the way to go. If it doesn't get better then it's a dealer issue for sure

Same issue. 4 week old GSA

Hi, exactly the same problems.. Very unnerving when overtaking..
I have been making sure I keep my feet away from the gear lever & making positive actions with the clutch & gear lever.
It seems to have calmed down now, I have done 1400 miles. :thumb

If a thickish road tax holder has been fitted where the exhaust valve servo lives then this can make the unit rub on the gear linkage giving gear change issues
