Hi following my little trip up the m6 120 miles to junc33 dyno centre (owned by andy previous owner of quill exhausts) this morn for a custom map. the bike DOHC has only done 1000 miles and only fitted with full exhaust with baffles and quick action throttle.

Bike on dyno.
bikedyno001.jpg

as you can see ive put baffles in the race system as it was way too loud however its still loud but not offensive like it was.

Dyno graph BHP before in RED with stock fueling after in BLUE with map.

All the above figures are at the wheel, and both cylinders was mapped seperate, and than both tables compared and set up from a 0 map file, when each cylinder was mapped there was very liitle difference, however one thing thats not been mentioned on this forum, there are limitations in the stock ecu regarding how the stock bike is set up for passing noise regs its not just the valve if the dyno man your using knows his stuff he should point this out when mapping the throttle positions at 20% throttle at 5k rpm the power drops off like its hit a limiter than picks its self up again(i saw the graph and i watched as it did it, and probably on the rd you may not even notice it) and than at 60% throttle at 8k rpm and 80% throttle at 8k this is too get by the noise regs as the DOHC engine is far noiser than the previous years, 100% throttle is fine power seems to flatten out around 8k, and so what bmw have done to the stock ecu is to retard the ignition at the above stages to get pass noise regs and by doing this it loses torque! im going to see if im able to remove this by fitting a ignition module from dyno jet, if there available and it will up the torque.

Tbh i did'nt know what to expect i thought it would have been more(it sounds like its got more!) probably because ive got another toy with over 170bhp @ wheel and 106bhp dont seem alot but the bike rides different now its very crisp and super-smooth, so is the gain worthy of the outlay the exhaust cost!!!! however it sounds nice, and having a look around what 2010 bikes are making 105@ wheel is about right.

Cost having one mapping done will cost you £150, having both cylinders mapped seperate will cost you £180, how long did it take the bike was put on the dyno at 10.30 and it was taken off at 4pm so i deffo got my monies worth.

Andy is a really nice guy he will make you coffee or tea all day and you can watch him do everything.
I have no connections with his business but id like to give him a free plug as ive used him many times and always been very happy.

dyno results

Hi Dave

Great report what does a standard 2010 gs have power and torque.
i will post my resuts monday eve

regards

andy

tell more please

you say red graph is stock fuelling, do you mean a 0 graph or the dynojet stock graph which add a lot of fuel at the bottom of the rev range but not a lot at the top

any chance of posting the A/F Line on the two final graph did the red graph seriously lean out

I think when I had my ZZR done by Hilltop I was told they can alter ignition curves on some bikes, as they remap the stock ECU all parameters and maps are in theory "reachable"

I know most ECU's also run several maps, for example a steady state (cruising) and acceleration maps that they flick between depending on what is happening.

I know with Triumphs it is also possible to change both fuelling and ignition (and trim each cylinder) using either approved (expensive) software, or a handy little utility some nice chap on the interweb has written.

I did put a long post up about dyno's and stuff:

Dave do you have the fuel air ratio graph before and after. Would be interesting to know how lean it ran with the full exhaust set up on standard fuelling. Cheers Mike

Hi chaps,,

ANDREW,
stock 2010 bike they state 110hp at crank and 88lbs torque, im told they lose 10hp from the crank to wheel, my torque is down from this quote however evey bike is different and bmw probably only take there hp from there test dummy bike, when you have your bike mapped ask the dyno guy to run up the bike holding 20% - 60% - 80% throttle and see what it does on the graph these are the positions we found that the stock ecu retarded, ive since checked akro's site as they have listed there graph for the full system and 6bhp @wheel is right so im:thumb2 and my torque graph is much cleaner than theres so again im chuffed with that and tbh i think my bike needs to do a few more miles, its only done 1k so really still tight, ive never owned a 12gs before but i noted when on the dyno with the cold blowers on the bike still got hot and we had to stop and let it cool down as it robbed it of power a one stage being air cooled.

DAVID/APE,
when i fitted the zorst i did run the bike for a few hrs at short stages without the pc5 and it stunk of fuel to a point it gave me a headche so i never touched it again until the pc arrived, now when dyno jet sent me the pc5 they had loaded a map for a full zorst and the 1st run i was told the fueling A/F was'nt to bad but still lean in places, (ill correct myself sorry to confuse) the red line in the dyno graph is dynojets map, than my man 0 the graph and completely done his own mapping starting from 0 the blue line is the custom map taken from both cylinders, i dont have the A/F graph but i stood at the side of the dyno at all times and was looking at A/F 14.1-14.3 does that make sense!!

RASHER,
Ive read your post previous and was a good write up, now i wont mention names but i did also call a business thats maps/flashes the stock ECU on saturday to ask if they could remove the retard at various stages, all i got in return to my Q's was i need to spend £370 having there mapping done and junk my pc5:eek:, i did ask to see a graph to there claim as they suggested they have/could get alot more hp and torque versus the pc5 but that could be all pub talk i await to see!!

Dave..

Dave..

Yeah, lots of that, so many "tricks" with Dyno's that graphs are worthless, Dynojets are not the most accurate, not that it matters with same dyno / same day / same bike, but to compare from one to another is pointless.

The dynojet showed my ZZR at 168 before and 174 after, Hilltop's Dynapro (a more exotic bit of kit) showed it at 158 before and 166 after and I believe typically reads about %5-10% lower than a Dynojet dyno.

Tuning companies often take "flash" readings to up the results, warm a bike to get the oil thin, let it cool so the engine temp is lower but oil stil warm and quickly bang out a graph - you will notice most dyno operators do a run or so before taking the reading to get the bike to normal temperature.

I have also seen an example where the shop put much lower air temps into the dyno software in the morning when the bike arrived, and then higher ones in the afternoon, this causes the correction factors to skew the results in their favour with the before and after.

At the end of the day if the AF is pretty good afterwards so your bike ain't gonna blow up any other performance gains or improved MPG is just a bonus.

In all honesty although I got an on paper improvement on ECU remap over PC3 with last bike it was not noticeable on the road, I noticed it was a shade smoother (less numbness on hands) but the extra few bhp were not obvious, I was however happy not to have the PC3 as it is just another item that could fail.

Dont know if its just me but i cant see my pics just stating forbidden 403 WTF i never asked em to be removed maybe someone can explain as im a pooter newbie and still learnining and i thought i was doing well being able to load pics .......:(

Dave..

Looks like image shack have removed them for some reason.

Where these images scanned in off a piece of paper or are they on a disc for you to down load them.

Me too, I always find you need to be double jointed to get full throttle on most bikes, and does it mean you have to remove heated grips?

fookin imageshaggers so here goes again..

Can you let us know the name of the ebzy seller

and what hope of the money shot being posted ie the finalised "dynojet" fuel map :augie :)

do wonder why the left and right map from dynojet differs so much

David, ill call the dyno man ANDY and try and get the A/F map and ill post it up and the most common reason as to why dyno-jet and junc33 are so different dyno-jet use one bike and do they take the mapping off both cylinders!! to get this map, than send it out probably as a base map its not the 1st ive had and to be fair the A/F was not far out so i was told so its a good base map but everybike is run different and if you want it right than a custom mapping is the rd to go down.

THE LEVERS ARE £23 and are exactly the same as i have the gen on another bike and there 100% match. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190490266730

THE QUICK ACTION is £42 i had one on my tricked up k12r and well worth the money and easy to fit no need to remove grips.
