Hello all from Canada. I've just joined this forum hoping that I can gather some info regarding rebuilding a GS. I joined another GS forum and asked the same questions as I will ask here but I think the members there are not much for DIY. Anyway, I have the opportunity to purchase a wrecked 2010 GS with only 19000km with ABS, ESA but I'm trying to cost out the price of rebuild parts. The damage is all front end so it will need forks, rim, exhaust header and timing chain cover. The other forum pointed me to realoem.com for parts compatibility which was quite helpful. According to that site only late '08 and newer models will interchange parts with 2010. What I am wondering is if I can use pre '08 parts for the rebuild - mainly the forks and the cast rim. I imagine the header will not fit since the engine changed but I can't see why a pre '08 set of forks or a rim would not fit.
Apologies for the long winded post and thanks in advance for all the replies.

Rumour is that Remus and Akra headers will fit pre and post 2010 bikes.

As the front took a severe hit the front subframe is likely to be toast along with the forks. Also check the main cases for cracking.

There are some forks on ebay right now that some think are possibly stolen. But anything used from ebay can have doubtful history.

If you're planning to rebuild, ebay, breakers and the FS&W section here are going to be your best friends :thumb2

I have no idea on the pricing, but as alluded to above, make damn sure you check a bit deeper into the damage before committing....Forks are easy, but the frame would be a different matter if it's bent.....fixable, but whether it's worth it or not is debatable, given the prices of second hand straight bikes.

Good luck and welcome :beerjug:

Thanks for all the replies so far. Here in Canada and especially in Ontario bikes get written off for what may look like minimal damage and once they have a salvage or 'irreparable' brand they can never be put back on the road. This one does not have the 'irreparable' brand which means that it is still safe to put back on the road (no frame damage) but the insurance company chose not to repair it. I have been scouring the internet for used parts but they are hard to come by for such a new model that's why I was wondering if anyone knew for sure if pre '08 forks and rim would fit the 2010. The engine cases are fine with only a scuff on the right case protector. Damage to the timing cover is just to the cover and does not extend to the engine block. If my estimate is correct I can use all new OEM parts and still be in it for ALOT less than a 2010 goes for around here but hey, if I can use good used parts why not.

My 2008 GSA suffered a light front end impact with a submerged low wall whilst fording a river making it unrideable. It needed recovering to the dealers, then new fork slider tubes which were not ridiculously priced. The dealer checked everything else and all was fine including the front subframe, although they said the front wishbone is prone to damage in a front end impact, hence I would advise you to check closely for damage in this area.

I see no sensible reason why BMW would fit different forks and rims to the slightly later models with twin cam heads. I would fit good used or new parts, then take a careful test ride and if all seems well you are quids in.

Thanks for the input Pukmeister. IF i decide to get it I think my first course of action would be to replace the timing cover and see if the engine runs. The transmission shifts quite well with the engine off so if the engine runs well then I'll go ahead and start rebuilding the front end. I've looked at the wish bone itself and it really looks intact. I've also examined its attachment points and there were no cracks or damage. The only concern I had was that the space between the wishbone and the LS head right at the attachment bolt seems much smaller than on the RS. I've really been questioning whether to undertake the project but if I can get it for the right price I can always break it and sell the parts and break even. But I'd really like to get it going...

You do know the LS cylinder is further forward than the RS cylinder .....?

I'm not aware there's any difference in height. They're misaligned to enable alignment with the crank big-end journals so easiest if you just ignore the cylinders for all the measurements you're taking!

From the University of the Bleedin' Obvious, if it's not going to be keeper you need to be careful how much you spend as a repaired write-off will always be worth less than a clean bike. Eggs, Granny?

I definitely plan to keep it but since I cannot start the engine i would be taking a chance purchasing it. I can see the damage to the front end so I think with due diligence I can estimate the cost of repair but I can't assess if there is any damage to the engine since I can't start it with a broken timing cover. There is minimal visual damage to the engine aside from the broken timing cover.
