I guess it could always be disconnected if you don't like the noise

Disconnecting it will leave it permanently open = loud all the time.
(i know because my HP2S has the same arrangement)
The flap is designed to close at the exact revs that the noise emissions test is performed. then open again after.
Followed a 2010 GSA today and it sounded Fruity , like my old 08 GSA which Had remus headers and an Akro ,my GS 1200SE sounded pretty 
but I had him from the lights!!! Must Fit the headers and Akro to the SE

When you're on the move it seems to be protected by the centre and side stands as well as the pipe itself. Having said that, I bet the after market firms will soon have a cover on the market at a silly price.

Yep, touratech are showing one in their latest catalogue, but not available yet and no price listed.
Pick mine up in the midweek so cant wait to hear the roar, they also do an Akro end can as an add option
And yes I wear ear plugs all the time, only get one set of ear drums

I had a test drive today.
Got on bike without my plugs in, as my current GS is in stealth mode, ie std can therefore never an issue, although do wear them on long runs to protect them given the wind noise etc.
Anyway back to the point, I stopped after about 15 miles to put my plugs in as I was aware that it was certainly much louder. I have no problem with that, in fact get the impression a few cars were getting out my way sooner than normal so perhaps they too can hear it coming?
It's the business, and if just going at slow speeds, or rather low rpm not too noisy to me.
Like all things associated with noise - somewhat subjective.

You're not going fast enough if you can hear the exhaust when you're on the bike..............................

After 10 years of riding Harleys with straight through pipes...noisey it ain't!!
I used to set off car alarms, yeah it was silly and immature, but I was 45 at the time and if the neighbours complain...The Bee Joke comes to mind.....

....there is a Harley dealership opposite the BMW dealers I took the test ride at....and even he said 'if you think that's loud you should hear those Harleys come out in the morning!'

The noise YOU hear depends a lot on ytour helmet - but if a bike is so noisy that you feel embarrassed to drive to your house past all your neighbours that may worry you.

You would be daft to remove the EXUP valve as you would loose the low end torque and if you jammed it shut it probably wouldn't rev beyond 5000 rpm. Its not just a gimic or there to get away with a noisier exhaust, they really do improve the torque curve.

I agree the standard exhaust is to quiet, at motorway speeds and above the exhaust note all but dissapears, the 210 exhaust is to noisey on a long run it will become a nusence, mabe a quiet aftermarket can ? that will be a first !!

Although I dont get my 2010 til Wednesday, I have been out on the demo bike all day from my dealer (Cotswold, thanks Ben and Ross)
And I love the exhaust, sounds just lush, 'rorty' (new word invented the same time as the 1st post about the exhaust)is a good description, did about 120 miles, admittedly I wear custom earplugs, but I like the sound, it is not obtrusive. Louder maybe than previous models, my de-catted 1150GSA was throaty, but not as loud as KTM etc.
Biased, maybe, but, It's legal so dont fret.

Here in France it is the children on their mopeds and 50cc 'racers' that remove or alter their silencers to impress their mates. They grow out of it! Of course our average speeds are a lot higher than in the UK and it is possible to remain at the legal limit + a bit for long periods and the aim is to reduce noise, whether from the wind or the exhaust.

Because my love, they protect your hearing from damaging noises, such as wind etc, not exhausts, Having been employed to ride bikes for 20+ years the advantage of wearing them is obvious.
But I know many who dont and they do develop hearing loss above the normal age related loss.
I had my hearing checked annually for work and the only depreciation was because of age. (Minimal)
I said 'custom earplugs' which are fitted with filters which let you hear non damaging sound like speech and the like but block the damaging noise.
The foam ones just block everything but better than nothing
