Ah, well I didn't know anything about theses wonderful devices; too late for me anyway as I was in the Royal Artillery and my hearing was irreparably damaged long before anybody realized that a lot of big bangs about 10 yards from your ear could be harmful!

Never too late Brian. Aside from hearing damage, spending all day on the bike without ear plugs will seriously affect your ability to concentrate and will make you tired much more quickly.

On the ear-plugs side of things............
.....I don't think the loudness of the exhaust is a reason to wear them...wind noise is the reason for wearing them!
With ear-plugs in the exhaust isn't really noticable, but without them it is.
On my 06 GSA with ear-plugs in the noise is minimal, but without them the engine noise becomes an issue.
I will say that....the 2010 motor is much quiter, even if the exhaust is noiser.

Certainly on my 2008 model (I should 'admit' that it is 'only' the ordinary GS - not the Adventure) the general clatter from the engine overcomes the exhaust burble; A system 6 helmet also seems to have cut down of most of the wind noise - so I ride along in my silent world, listening to the birds in the trees etc.etc. - or I coulmd just be in cloud cuckoo land and actually quite deaf - my wife thinks so!

Although the reduced engine noise would explain a more noticable exhaust noise, the fact is the 2010 exhaust is just noiser....if you hear it you'd know, and most would agree...it has a different tone and resonance, nothing to do withit being a quieter engine.

I thought only Yamaha's had an Exup valve.
I also thought the new BMW exhaust valve was only for noise control purposes and caused a dip in power output when it closed up for noise emission test purposes. So no loss of any power low down or higher up then, just when it closes, so not an Exup valve at all really.
I also thought the Akropovic end can looks good so I am going with one from the start on my new 2010 GSA.
I also think that the valve is in the end can pipe section so gets replaced with a new end can or left out.
I intend to check out the effect of this valve on a dyno run once run in, with both normal operation and open all the time.

It will be with the Akro end can of course but should give an idea of the effect of permanent opening against closure at 4500rpm..........

It is noiser than my old 58 GSA with Remus and Akro! You could always get a better quieter helmet, or ear plus or just put the ipod on with some NWA sounds. Me I love the sound, but after years of Harleys..it's muted.

I'm sure many others will buy it because of it, even I might buy it despite of it...but at the moment, and subject to a second test ride, the jury's out with me.

I now go to sleep every night with this kind of ultra-high pitch noise in my ears, the sort of noise you can hear when an old tubed television is switched on...
The doc says it's "tinitus" or something.
Wish I'd had the common sense to listen to my elders when I was younger...

I have had tinitus for years, one of the reasons I always wear ear-plugs, to protect what I've got left.
Mine was caused through work though, and apart from the early years on learner bikes, have always worn them on the bike.
*note*....nothing to do with my apprehension of the new exhaust note...that's down to purely personal taste
Picked up the GSA on Saturday, dropped it back at Bahnstormer last night after 550miles including a dash to Dartmoor for lunch. I have no issues with the noise levels and think it sounds great (TourX + earplugs).
