2010 GSA Exhaust Noise

If it's too loud you're too old. I'm 67 with new GSA and can't see the problem. Soon off to Crete. What's happened to UK bikers? Whining about pot holes, bit of gravel etc. Get out and ride somewhere warm and meet some real hazards. :Motomartin

Aha!! a man after my own heart :beerjug:

(Although i'm only 44 ......... yer old git ...... :aidan)

What noise annoys an oyster,

"....If it's too loud you're too old. I'm 67 with new GSA and can't see the problem....." Or, of course, you may be getting a little deaf????

I took a demo out a couple of weeks ago.... and I thought it was very annoying, if I bought one, the silencer and box thing would be the first thing in the bin :barf then a standard silencer from 09 would be fitted.
I likes stealth mode, don't want people to know I'm coming

I think the 2010 standard set-up sounds good at low revs (around town, etc) but is still a bit disappointing when you give it some stick - nothing like the sound of an open pipe when you give it some

Stick in the mud?

The car industry has been working furiously hard for many years to produce cars that are Quiet inside and OUTSIDE. It is obviously a little more difficult to make a bike quiet but there have been great improvements; Now I wonder if those of you prefer a noisy exhaust on a bike have removed baffles, under bonnet felt, and other sound deadening devices from your cars - and if not, why not? If you are trying to improve your image - it is for whose benefit?
Frankly I am fed up with children on their scooters and mopeds with their shattering exhaust notes that interrupt our conversations as we sit out on the bar terrace. Happily most motorcyclists, here in France, are no longer juvenile;

Excellent point, brilliantly made. Still like the noise of my 10 though :hide

I had a R1200S. The first thing I did after buying it was fit a Remus and drill the baffles out,I also had,at the time,an ElectraGlide with Vance and Hines "mufflers". I like loud bikes.
Next came a June '09 R1200GS,off came the standard can and on went a Remus Ti can, baffles in. Great sound and not too noisy even after 10/11 hours on the road.
I had a ride on the '10 GSA on launch day in Feb. Liked the bike, the new motor and the new sound. Not enough to order a new GSA though, too much money to change and I did'nt think I'd get on with the heavier/larger GSA after my GS. But the exhaust note, spot on.
Last Monday I rode my '09 over to Alan Jeffries for it's re-call and booked out the '10 GS for a couple of hours. On the way there I go through the tunnel by Leeds/Bradford airport. I like to cane it through there, sounds ace. So I brought the '10 bike back through the tunnel on the test ride.

Got back to A.J's.........ordered one.

Not just because of the noise, but maybe it seems to emphasise the better performance and mid-range of the Twin Cam.
I've done around 8k on the '09 so it's nicely loosened up, and to hop straight onto the '10, which had done 1.6k (a demo bike, also nicely loosened up :augie) and notice a big difference was certainly a deciding factor too.How I'll find it after a long day in the saddle, who knows? I can't see me taking off a standard can and fittting a quieter one.
WAS planning a test on a Multistrada...........no point,skint now.

Good'n

Hey There,

I'm a fan of a quiet bike personally.. Having always raced offroad with noisy bikes (e.g. Husqvarna's with no straight through exhausts)... it just gives you a headache if your doing a hell of a lot of miles..

Now with my 2007 BMW R1200GS Adv.. Having recently completed a London to Sydney ride via central asia and Japan I would have loved more noise in Mongolia/Krygyzstan where drivers just either a don't care or don't see you.. very scary at times..

I have straight through headers with the standard can...

Yes I will certainly get a noisier 'silencer' the next time I pass through Mongolia/Krygyzstan,

Well today was the day....

...after much dliberation, after finally placing an order for the 2010 GSA, to replace my old 06 GSA,...today was the day I picked it up! :JB

My first impressions are good...the engine is more powerful, and more brisk, and the clutch seems loads better, and also seems like more engine braking..

...all in all a better, smoother, all round package.

I also went for the Enduro gearbox....and to be honest can't really tell much difference...although this may be because the clutch seems better anyway...but fully loaded in the Alps will be the real test of the value of it for manouverability and grunt I guess.

But I did find the demo bike a bit brisk off the line, and the Enduro box on mine seems to have taken the edge off that....and I prefer it with the more controlled/smoother take up that my combination has. :thumb....but that is obviously a personal choice, and preference.

But.....

...as for the exhaust noise.....

.....I've got to be honest, after the few miles that I have done today.......

.......I really like it now! :thumb

...definately a more subtle tone than I remember, and although it was one of my main reservations in trading in...

...I have a feeling it might be one of the many characteristics of the GSA that I will grow to love...a lot! :thumb2

These Gs's....you try to dislilke something about them...but they just get under your skin, and you end up loving them even more :thumb

...just the reactions from people seeing a shiney new one being wheeled out at the dealers, who came and chatted to me about it with such affection, shows the draw of a GSA.

A very proud, happy GSA owner :thumb2

P.s....as for my concerns for the neighbours reaction to the increased engine noise?....

...bugger them! :thumb

Just got one as a courtesy bike whist mine is in the shop. I've a full remus system on mine and the standard 2010 exhaust is certainly more intrusive at idle than the remus. The drone whilst sitting at traffic lights is not the best exhaust note I've heard.

That said, the engine really is a peach. Could be tempted :D

The noise from the new 2010 GS exhaust was described by the dealer as "manly", I agree :D

Sod 'em all!

I never worry about my neighbours.

My lawn mower is far noisier than any bike I've owned and they don't moan about that....mind you, they are all over 75 years old so pretty well all deaf!

It's like living on the set of 'Cocoon'.:D

If you can remember the film 'Cocoon'..then you can't be that far behind them! :thumb

.....if you can't remember seeing the film 'Cocoon'..then maybe you're even closer behind them!!

....if you can't remember what you had for breakfast.....then you may be moving in with them soon!!! :)

Me??...I've never heard of the film me!...far too young! :augie

Had a test ride on a 1200 Adventure on Friday. Took my wife with me as she has never been on an Adventure. Did about 150 miles, M way, dual cw, twisty A + B roads. Talking about the bike latter I asked her her opinion on the usual, seat comfort, buffeting and noise, particular the exhaust. In her words " It was fine never really noticed it". I had to agree with her. They have got it just about right. Loved the bike. The eight valve engine is superb. Big improvement on the four valve. Will definitely be having one......F
