See my latest post on thread about engine cut out. anyone heard anything more about an engine related recall in the offing for 2010 bikes ?

I think you're being a bit premature with this question. Your cutting-out problem appears to have happened on earlier year models as well as the 800.

Has any other 2010 owner on the forum experienced this problem ? Mine has been fine.

Not had the same issue, although it did cut out once as I blipped the throttle to hear that beautiful exhaust rasp, but just blamed that on myself for being a big kid :augie

is the engine still tight (ie under the 1st 1000 or so miles) it might just need a few more miles on the bores and bearings.

regarding the recall I am only reporting what I have been told by a main dealer service dept. watch this space. Imagine this would be of interest to all 2010 owners.

my bike collected from home by southport superbikes today ( at 5pm 160 mile round trip for them - fine service ) They have been great about it and have assured me they will try their best to get to the bottom of it.

To the mines ok brigade imagine how you would feel coasting into a corner at 30 mph when your £12K 2 day old bike bike has just stalled without any warning on a down change.....

will keep you posted with progress.

Interestingly there appears to be a similar issue with the 2010 r1200rt which now has exactly the same engine as the gs. For further info see the problem discussed on the American RT site at

There's been previous posts on earlier models with similar problems. I had my 08 GSA cut out on downshifts from 3rd to 2nd on numerous occasions when the bike had less than 5k miles. Now with more mileage I have not had the issues for a while, but in addition to extra miles I do have the accelerator module fitted and remus headers. No idea what caused the initial problems and neither did the dealer who looked at it. It always happened on quickish stops and always 3rd to 2nd. I also noticed it took a few seconds before the engine would fire back up on the button and the intruments were all blank while I freewheeled. I did once try and bump start while still moving by dumping the clutch. All that did was lock the rear.

Maybe I just changed my gear changing style - who knows:nenau

WOOOAH - big thanks Ampthill - that is definitely the same problem and hardly suprising since the engines have similar valve gear (are they exactly the same ?) It fits in precisely with what the guy at Ocean told me. A camshaft problem that needs tooling to fix and may involve a recall.

I predict theres going to be a lot more threads on cam timing recall as this plays out.

Quote from march 24th thread on BMWLT forum above

'Just heard back from the dealer today. They spoke with the BMW guys and were told that a service bulletin is due out in a couple of days that deals specifically with this issue. Apparantly, they need to change the cam timing on one of the exhausts to correct the issue (?? I'm not that mechanically inclined when it comes to engines). Before my dealer can make the fix, they need to order in some special tools.' he went and the fix done and the bike has been fine since.

sounds to me like the exhaust cams are running off time,

woops, could be expensive this, bmw will want it sorted soon,

mind you all the other problems the 1200 has had didnt do bmw any harm.

:augie

Remember where you heard it first guys ! ( seems I wasn't being premature but you really need to ask my missus about that.)

Last month I had my cam timing reset without fitting the new Cam sensor ring that it is now forming the recall. Will be calling dealer to find out if I need the new part as well. Bike seems to be ok but its hard to seperate all the running in / type of fuel issues etc at just 1000 miles. Does still regularly do farty pick ups when change down blipping which concerns me a bit.

It would be nice to get some definitive info from a dealer about which model numbers are affected. How about a scan of the letter some have now received ?

Thanks for the heads-up - had mine done yesterday :thumb Haven't received the letter yet but I called them just in case and it was on the list. The bike felt fine before though so not sure what it's done. Btw BMW call it a 'campaign' and not a recall ;)

Yep having same problem with mines on downshift from 2nd to 1st. Its going in Friday for first service they will look at it then.

just spoke to Service Manager at Calterdon there is a recall for Cam Sensor replacement.

Southport superbikes have just confirmed that over 50 of their 2010 GS/ RT bikes are affected by the CSR 'campaign'. The CSR costs £4.77 ! Getting mine done saturday and will advise here if any noticable difference.

had it done but no noticeable difference compared with before ie after the cam timing had been originally corrected at 200 miles. possible improvement in fuel consumption - had dropped to 50 now back up to 55mpg. It would be really good if someone with inside knowledge BMW service could explain what was wrong with the original CSR and where this 4 degrees that keeps being mentioned fits into the picture......
