Hi folks,

I did do a search beforehand but couldn't find the answer so apologies in advance if I missed it.

Just after picking up a 2011 GSA and am delighted with it. No problems so far but I was just curious to know if there is any definite way to tell just by looking at the bike if it has the dreaded fuel strip sensor or the float type, ideally without disassembling half the bike?

I can't find anything concrete online about when exactly BMW switched back to the float type sensor for the GSA.

From doing a bit of research on here and elsewhere I have seen some say the 2012 model went back to the float, while others say from 2010 on-wards; so it seems a bit vague as to when the switch to float was made. I also recall someone stating they changed the sensor back to the float type in the late 2010 models. So as you can see the answers are varying quite a bit.

Is it safe to assume the 2011 has the float type? Or is there any tell tale signs of which sensor it has...apart from waiting to see if it eventually bites the dust?

Both.I had a strip and have converted it to float. I did notice the plug to the float has only two wires to it as opposed to the four of the strip, maybe that's an easy way to tell.

Does your bike have an onboard computer specced?

Ie can you bring up remaining mpg (range etc) on the combi by pressing a button on the left hand switch cluster?

If yes - Fuel strip

If no - Float

Hi level ZFE uses fuel strip Lo level ZFE uses float

If it hasn't failed yet I would say it's a float. Lol

My 61-plate (so possibly a 2012 model year) has a float sensor (according to GS911) and can display remaining range, so I am not sure that can be relied on to tell the difference.

My 2010 gs has a float..take the fuel cap off and the float mechanism will be revealed if it's fitted.

The very early bikes were floats then fuel strips came in and they went back to floats some time in 2010. If you have a fuel strip check out the threads on float conversions as the strips are a very poor design almost intended to fail.
