Hah, my old bike, my name is even on some of those receipts in the pics. I owned it from 2014-2020 and did the majority of that mileage mostly on long trips to the USA and all over Europe. I only sold it coz I’d bought my V85 and the new shiney thing was getting all my attention. Sold it to Bobster via this forum who titivated it up a bit for a big trip he had planned but I don’t think it came off. In addition to the stuff mentioned Mikeyboy serviced the FD, shaft and swing arm at about 50,000 miles - more as a precaution. A new alternator was fitted at about 70,000 too.

Glwts it was and will continue to be a brilliant bike.

Hi Austin - thanks for your message. Thanks also for the extra detail, it's obvious the bike has been well looked after. I didn't meet the previous owner. I'm guessing it's the chap who bought it from you. He took it to Steve Scriminger at Sleaford who is very well known for his expertise. My understanding is as you say, some European travel was in plan and he asked Steve to give it a check over for the trip. As the clutch was an unknown he asked Steve to replace it, which it didn't need but you as you know, you can't tell until it's open. At which point you may as well change it, also Steve was aware that on occasion gearbox bearings can play up so these were upgraded too. Unfortunately the chap was diagnosed with prostate cancer and the trip never happened and the bike was hardly used, so he asked Steve (who I've known for years) if he knew anyone. I'd mentioned to Steve about a year before if something came up let me know and there you have it. I've had 1100's and a 1200RT but wanted to try one before I started to reduce size/weight. I'm 67 now and just finding it more than I need but it's been great. I had the shocks re-sprung for my weight as a baseline and lowered 25mm. It would be a great main bike but also a good 2nd to keep mileage down. Thanks again for your message.

Regards, Ian

A great example of a well used but well maintained independent bike... That's where milage becomes less important than the history and looks a really great deal...👍 You don't need dealer stamps or low miles to make a great looking buy...

I sold a GS911 with the bike to Bobster. The 911 still had 5 spaces left on it so it had some value for other bikes so either of Bob or Steve Scriminger may have kept it, but it would be worth tracking down, even if now full as this bike’s record lives with that gs911 forever. At one point Bob had put yellow panels on the tank, and I think his big trip was to Alaska with Sgt Bilco. He offered the bike back to me when it was obvious that trip wasn’t to going come off. Bob also bought a project R850 GS from my son a year or later. I never heard what happened to that bike though.

I was aware of the work Bobster did on the bike as he sent me progress updates and photos of the work he did and had done including that SteveS had been very complimentary about my bike maintenance. I just did it by the book - my oily thumbprints will be all over that Haynes manual - although I suspect it was just my judicious use of copperease and ACF50 that will have made his dismantling job a lot easier.

The Wilber’s were originally set for two-up riding with a lot of luggage so not surprised they needed some work. They were fitted at Revs racing in 2016 I think. I did have some problems with the front ESA motor afterwards but a replacement motor eventually fixed it. There’s a thread on here somewhere about it all as I thought it worth sharing what I learned about how the ESA works as I progressed to a fix.

The rest of the motor remained strong and never used much if any oil and I’m sure it has many tens of thousands of miles left in it.

Here it is, overloaded on the way south from Nordkapp. There’s room for my wife on that pillion seat too…

Many thanks for this. What a handsome chap! Steve has his own gear and the bike didn't come with panniers or frames either, just the rack so I guess sold separately by Bob. I didn't meet him, I got the impression that with the cancer diagnosis he was not so well and so he asked Steve to MOT and sell. Luke at K-Tech described the rating for the springs as for 2 fat Germans and luggage! I see you made up the extra weight with plenty of extra gear! I still have 'your' springs! Steve is well known for his expertise and because he knew the bike and had worked on it he had no problems recommending it, as you say he was very complimentary about it's service history. I interpreted your notes in the manual as I always like to keep a log to give to the next owner. It's going reluctantly as it is such a smooth and comfortable ride. Regards.

That was my thinking. Have had lots of bikes and various boxers including R1100GS's. If I didn't have one when I bought it I would have always wondered, which is why I went for a well looked after not too pricey 2011. No issues with the bevel and no fuel sensor strip. Best of the last before liquid cooling.

Good morning, just a question re 12/05/17 67600 FD rebuild & front crown pivot. Was there an issue? The earlier models had a bevel problem mainly due to a seal issue. Why was this done? Many thanks, Ian

FD rebuild was more a precaution. The oil I drained out was always milky so water getting in the breather or breather blocked and condensation forming. There was a slight weep at the big seal too. Mikeyboy reported very little wear but for peace of mind worth it especially as we were doing two big euro trips that summer getting to Nordkapp and to the southernmost point in Spain. But it should be good for another 70,000+ . Crown pivot boot was split and the pivot showing signs of wear so I had it replaced for the same reasons.

Thanks, much appreciated. Potential buyer looking tomorrow. I like to be honest and give as much info as I can.

After talking Mikeyboy when I picked up the bike after the work I did concoct a high level breather arrangement. It was on it when I sold it but probably got removed by Steve Scriminger as it was very definitely a home made job. I believe it worked.
