in a change tot he normal programme cos they were all in the north, the ones left decided to get the scouse boat to belfast
landed 0630 sat morning
- back in the house hour and half ago

- met a german fella with his laydee in a camper van - massive thanks to him cos the only tool i didnt bring (you see the blue bag ) - i didnt bring to get a 12 off him to get the tank off = spent too much nice time here hence missed out later on

So who visited Capt Crozier today? Yellow 1200 and blue 1150.
Some From Sunday
Did two on Sunday - Longford / Westmeath and Roscommon.
Dull but warm for most of the day.
Took a spin across the Slieve Blooms on the way up.
More or less the highest point in the midlands I think.
Lovely bog around.
Longford / Westmeath.
Roscommon. Triatlon here next week.
All modes of transport about.

How it got the name Wolftrap Mountain ??
The extermination of wolves

The history of where Wolftrap Mountain got its curious name is not easily found. Wolves had flourished in Ireland for thousands of years, and indeed ringforts and other defensive settlements were built between 1000 BC to AD 1000 partly to protect livestock from these creatures. The earliest evidence of wolves in Ireland comes from bones found in Cork that are 34,000 years old. It is known that Ireland had a large wolf population all the way up to the 18th century. They were seen as a serious problem to farmers for centuries, and in 1584 the first official scheme was devised to destroy them. However it was when Cromwell arrived that the elimination of wolves became a priority.
In 1652 Cromwell’s government introduced substantial bounties for every wolf destroyed, with females attracting the highest price. It is estimated that there were between 400 and 1000 wolves in Ireland before they were seriously targeted. In fact one of the nicknames for Ireland in Cromwell’s time was ‘Wolf Land’. This was probably because wolves had been made extinct in England and Wales by about 1500, and they would have been a real curiosity for the invading Cromwellians. (Wolves survived in Scotland until the 1700's) The widespread presence of wolves in Ireland is reflected in the Irish name for the animal – Mactire – or ‘Son of the Country’.
In a sad vicious circle, it was Cromwell’s destruction of the people and the land that led to an increase in the numbers of wolves, resulting in the perceived need to destroy them.
I couldn’t find the origin of the name Wolftrap Mountain, but knowledge of the government policy of 1652 to exterminate them makes things clearer. Whole packs of wolves were targeted at a time, and the Irish Wolfhound was instrumental in hunting them. Indeed a law was passed by Cromwell’s government to ban the exportation of Irish Wolfhounds as they were seen as too vital to the hunting of wolves at home. Perhaps Wolftrap Mountain was the scene of a famous hunt that resulted in some particularly notable extermination of wolves. Records show that a Mr John Boate received a reward for killing the last wolf in Laois in 1700. The boundary of Laois and Offaly passes through the summit of Wolftrap Mountain. Who knows if this was the scene of John Boate’s endeavour? (It is generally agreed that the last wolf in Ireland was killed on Mount Leinster in Carlow in 1786)
A tale describes how in 1182, a priest travelling from Ulster encountered a talking wolf, which revealed itself to be a man of Ossory. The Kingdom of Ossory included the Slieve Blooms in its domain. So as far back as then wolves were connected to the Slieve Bloom area. That is about as much as my research revealed. The elusive naming of Wolftrap Mountain may well remain lost in the mists of time.

We went by there hunting for fish (and chips!). The ride from Mountrath to Portumna over the Slieve Blooms is a beauty.
I had thought about meeting-up with you in Salthill, but it was 10.30 by the time I left Cork, so too late after doing the Photo Points to nip over to Galway, as ye would have been gone.
Maybe the next Fish Dash or else Leenane.

I changed my bike as the FZ6 wasn't comfortable for long distances, so first day out with Triumph Tiger 800 and I got 2 points done - could have done alot more but have to run in engine slow!

I'm heading off to Achill in the morning to hopefully get the photo point done (on a blackbird!!)
Just in case I can't get to the Achill-Henge monument, does anyone happen to have the grid ref for the alternative photo point??
This is the one for Achill-henge - N53 58.7212 W10 5.9593 so if anyone had the grid ref in this format, I'd be very grateful.

Cheers Frank. It was an easy find in the end and certainly a lot easier than the bomb track up to achill henge, especially on a blackbird. I got them both done anyway.

I was supposed to head off with Aidan on the Saturday morning but the weather was woeful so we cancelled
Forecast for Sunday & Monday didn't look too bad but Aidan didn't have Monday off so decided to head off on my own.
Sunday I was on the road at the crack of mid-morning heading for the Galway point but did a bit of bumbling on my way
On a back road near Portarlington :

It had been drizzling a bit all the time but as I approached Blue Ball I could see a decent shower approaching so pulled in for breakfast while it passed :
Next, brief, stop was Cloghan :
And then Menlough :
And a wee place called Killascore :
Then on to Garbally Castle :
Finally made it to the Photo Point in Monivea :
Then a short stop & toilet break at "Castletown" :
Lunch was here (probably the worst chowder I've ever had ) :
Passed Moyne Castle
Met John & Maureen in Cong :
And on to Lough Corrib :
The Mamturks :
Lough Nafooey :
Killary harbour :
Aasleagh Falls :
And finally made it to the Mayo Photo point, Achill Henge :
Stopped at Achill Sound for a cuppa & to try figure out where I was going to stay for the night. While there I met 2 guys from my school days so that delayed me & it was after 9pm before I got to the Sligo Park hotel where they kindly held a table while I changed for dinner :
After a healthy breakfast of fruit & kippers I was raring to go.
First stop was the Sligo point :
Met this fella in Ballyshannon :
Through Barnsmore on the way north :
Hadn't stopped here before so I did this time :
Next stop was the Donegal point :
Down to Greencastle for the ferry to Magilligan :
The view back towards Greencastle from Binevenagh Forest :
And on to the Derry point :
Followed shortly afterwards by the Antrim point :
And then it was time for a late lunch. Sure, where else would ya go in this part of the world ?
After letting my wee snack settle I headed in a southerly direction to pick up the Fermanagh / Tyrone point :
Last photo that evening was the Ulster Section point in Ballybay :
A quick stop for tea with friends near Enfield & I was home about 10.30 having covered almost 1100km in the 2 days.
I should have applied myself more on the first day & not left myself so much to do on the second day but it was an enjoyable spin along some beautiful roads
Other than the light drizzle east of the Shannon on Sunday the only other rain I had was the last 15 minutes before Sligo. Not bad given the horrendous weather on the Saturday
That just leaves me with 2 points to do, Down/Armagh & Kerry – should be a handy spin some day….
