2014 RT's GROUNDED! DO NOT RIDE!

"Sachs will have liability insurance"
Its not Sachs on this model but whoever made them must be in trouble.
The liability insurance is for injury claims etc and will not cover them for replacing faulty goods. So if we imagine 8000 faulty shocks at say £500 each = £4,000,000 to manufacture, probably now scrap and then replace them with shocks which may cost more to make and probably not get paid more for the company is set to loose £5,000,000. If BMW turn the screws and demands they compensate owners + loss of good faith, labour to fit etc the supplier must be finished off.
BMW would then have to find an alternative supplier, develop the product, test it, tool up and so on, this would take a long time, so perhaps BMW taking over the supplier may be the only option.

What will amount to more than 4 mil is the depreciation BMW will take on all the loaners out there for this year, which will be claimed on, loss of brand, reputational costs, loss of future sales on the RT etc. I m no actuary, but I reckon this is in the region of 8-12mil claim, certain to take Marzochi to town.

I shudder to think what the total cost will be, but I'd imagine it will be far north of £10m, after loan bikes (£30 per bike, per day, per customer:eek:), storage of the bikes, replacement shocks, labour, refunds for those that reject their bikes, depreciation, and any lost orders/ contracts.

How do you arrive at £30/day? Is that the cost of ownership of an RT? ie - do you lose £11,000 in depreciation in the first year???

If the bike costs £10,000 to BMW - lend it out for a year, even if it is worth only £5,000 at the end of that - it is only £14/Day

Seems like some folk like to paint it real black for BMW.................

Retail cost to a client, but not the actual cost to them as a business

Correct. But I'm sure they'll be billing the insurance company the retail cost; why wouldn't they? But, even if they bill half that cost, the total claim will still be eye watering.

The Insurance Co may argue a 'block cost' for all hire, negotiated for the whole job

Anyway, the whole scenario is a major hassle for all concerned

I'd love to be at Garmisch, next week when loads of angry RT owners will be 'speaking' to the top men at BMW, no doubt:D

Agreed.:thumb Garmisch will certainly be entertaining!:D

if you think this recall is expensive, then how about this for expense. Mini (yes it's part of BMW me thinks) released a new version of the Mini with a 1.5 three cylinder diesel engine, and some of the journos reported NVH (noise vibration and harshness) issues, so BMW(Sorry I meant MINI...) stopped new deliveries to those who had orders placed and clawed back any that had already been delivered for a new engine to be fitted, with I THINK a redesigned crankshaft and counterbalancer. This included Mini's own demo fleet. Now THATS what I call expensive........How do I know this. err well I've just ordered one. Brand spankers new Mini Cooper D 5 door will hopefully be landing at my dealership in October.....

Did they let you test drive one first?:JB:hide:D

For once I am going to see the positives in this situation!

1. It doesn't seem as bad as the Porsche 911 GT3 engine saga .. read it on Pistonheads .. that's a whole new level of f**ked up.
2. Come this autumn and winter .. there will be a flood of nearly new LC GSs on the market through the BMW/Dealer auction route as they get rid of these loan bikes. Let's hope they cock up and flood the market when sales goes slow for the winter [unlikely] :D
3. At least they are doing a recall rather than use the usual "continuous improvement" route of the past

I'm trying to look on the positive side as well. With the RT laid up I've been able to give my trusty ultra reliable Honda a couple of runs out this week in the best weather we have had for ages so the grass has never been trimmed so well.

Hi All,

I used to post here when I owned the new first gen (2004) 1200GS, but left the fold when I went over to the orange side for 6 years or so (2008 990 Adv then 2011 990 SMT). Anyway, I'm back, so hi to all!! :-)

Am in the same boat as all the other RT LC owners, miffed that BMW can't see fit to communicate anything at all, but deeply impressed at the professional and sympathetic way our dealer (Cooper, Tunbridge Wells) has handled the whole situation.

Have been following this thread with great interest.....thought this post really summed everything up:

I don't work for BMW, nor would I want to, but am struggling to understand the problem here.:nenau

If you have a new RT, and aren't happy with the offering of a loan bike/ compensation, get a refund.

If you have a new RT on order, and aren't happy, cancel your order.

If you don't own a new LC RT, fuck off, and mind your own business.:D

We've gone through our options, love the GS loaner that we've been given and very nearly decided to just get one of them instead of the RT.....but then we remembered what we bought the bike for in the first place (we wanted a boxer engined tourer, not a replacement for our SMT!) so now we've decided. We're gonna do absolutely nothing. We're just looking forward to getting our lovely RT back!!!

In the meantime, the GS fucking awesome!!!! :green gri:thumby:

Cheers all, here's to getting our bikes back.

Well said that man :thumb:thumb:thumb

Just been into a BMW dealer and they have 3 new WC RT's in the corner, with sold on them.......................obviously not going anywhere, just a bit forlorn and sad....................all that razzamatazz of the new bike launch, just a few short weeks ago and 3 fancy new RT bikes that are embargoed and yet to turn a wheel

Dealer pick up, take off rear shock, insert temp strut, send off shock to have new strut - 4 / 6 weeks.

Have you heard something?

I was called today, dealer asked me to call BMW recovery to pick up bike to have it taken to secure storage facility.... No other info though

Yes, info from dealer. BMW should be sending a letter out detailing what is going to be done.
