Hi All

Anyone have ideas for fitting a top box onto the rear Passenger Seat?

I see BMW do a plate for their top box, I would prefer a Givi Top Box as I have a 58l Givi Tracker as a rear, ofc I want both to be fitted at the same time.

Thanks

Touratech do a metal plate that fits in place of the passenger seat. Two things to consider though:

1. would you be able to get on the bike with box in place?

2. would box fit between the grab rails?

Two top boxes fitted at the same time? I suppose it is no worse than a pillion plus topbox, but seems a lot of weight unnecessarily high up when you could put some lower down in panniers. Or will you have panniers too?

A top box is a lot lighter than a pillion, and the weight would be further forward, the rear would just be very light stuff. Panniers are a pain, plus very restricted in weight you put in them.

I do have quite a lot of weight in one Top box, I would often only use one, just want it forward and not hanging over the rear of the bike.

I wish you could buy a coffin top box, that went across rear seat and rack plate

Thanks, I agree getting on would be more awkward, but I can get leg over sideways on, as for your second point, good point something I would have to be aware of.

You could remove the grab rails but that would remove the existing rear rack too. Easily removed though - I've done it a few times because I fitted an aftermarket alarm and later a Fuzeblock in the concealed space at the back which you can only get at by removing the grab rails, and the rear carrier plastic moulding. The benefit would be that you could then get a flat platform made up to extend over both areas, using the existing fixing holes to bolt it to the subframe and hold the rear carrier moulding in place. I guess you would have to mount the existing rear box mounting plate on that platform too, so overall maybe quite a bit of work. Some pictures of the relevant bits here: http://www.rainbowbmw.com/BMWETK/SubCats/0A01_46.php

Consider how you will get to the lock and latch of the box on the pillion seat. Unless you mount the box backwards, of course...

Just curious but what do you intend to put in this box that makes panniers too restrictive?

Even for short trips I generally have about 20kg in my top box, as you know that is over double recommended, I carry Camera equpment tripod etc and other stuff, not a lover of panniers, rather have the weight further forward or split between 2 boxes.

I fitted the pax seat replacement bits, and mounted my BMW top box on the pax seat.

The only downside was mounting - you couldn't swing your leg over the box...:D

The grab rails had to come off as well.

Here is a pic sans box:
