Can the same be said for Boxerlusts GS ?

I recognise the bike. That blue really stands out. I think it featured in the thread where Walter Colebatch had one build or in Races to Places. Lyndon says the RFR is a better base to build on as the 690. I guess it is because the engine is a bit more powerful. I don't know much about these machines. There are few of them and not a lot of people know these bikes. What is the comparison between that and the newer 690/701?

This is what I'm talking about. Piccies courtesy Husky with a rally kit produced by themselves and Aurora (see below). The best is the ones that use the same parts as the produced by KTM/Husky and then adapt to their own needs for the big bike rallies which ensure you get a better quality design for touring. Not so sure about the carbon fibre tower for everyday use but the best I have seen is from Aurora or similar where the design is based on analysis in enduro conditions and adapted to suit. The tower can be unbolted on one side to have access to the wiring if you need to and no cutting/drilling of the frame and the warranty is preserved. But the screen is a bit more effort to take off with that kit. The FE450 rally kit Dakar style, similar to KTM, has a very quick way of getting the screen off without having to undo bolts. Better range than the GSA, lighter (about 100kg) and a proper bike for all roads and all conditions in the right hands. Currently doing the research because I would like to keep it for a long while.
Before that I have to comply with Sadiq Khan's ULEZ shit. What a ball ache and postponement of a project in waiting.

The original engine was a 654cc and no more powerful than my early 2009 690 enduro, but far nicer due to the carb vs the early EFI which wasn't great. The RFR was lovely and mellow. I've now got the 732 engine which is a bit of a beast with so much torque but it certainly doesn't feel as refined as the latest 690/701 which are as smooth as silk. The biggest difference with the RFR is the suspension and handling, plus it carries 32 litres of fuel really well and is designed to be worked on quickly and easily. It's a work of art. Stripping the Rally Raid kit fairing and tanks off kitted up standard 690's was a nightmare in comparison. Then again the RFR was designed for a purpose (to race Dakar) and the modifications Lyndon does makes it even better, particularly as an adventure travel bike.

I don't like the Tuono...What's the point of having a more upright superbike and still no hard bags or center-stand to make it a better road-bike than the RSV4 !
And all the thumper-talk bore me...When I was 12 years old I dreamed about the XR500 but by the time I was 16 that dream had been replaced by the R 80 G/S...Never looked at another thumper again...No power & too much vibration !
Bristolsaint...We all have different taste and preferences and that is fine with me...Like you said the 790/890 KTM's are play-bikes...Probably fun to ride on back-roads...But for the street I like more practical stuff...Windprotection/bags/centerstand are a must.Shaftdrive and Telelever additional pluses...I don't think I would ever buy another bike with chain-drive or a fork...
Tanneman...you said you are bored with the GSA...What GSA do you have ? Probably not a 1250...
If you have a 1200 I would be bored too...
But with a thumper or T7,A-T you will get bored even faster...
My advise...By a 1290SDR...The bike is definitely not boring as it is twitchy and the front wheel will see more air than asphalt...Just try not to race a guy on a 1250GS if the road is far from straight...
