2020 KTM 1290 Superduke vs 2019 1250 GS-HP

Boxerlust, this old man wants to spank your arse .
Wanna race ? :-)

The v4 will probably drop a valve 30 mins into the ride so I might put my money on boxerlust. Tortoise and hare etc.

I read somewhere ( serious article) that the Tuono V4 was rock solid reliability and build wise

Can the same be said for Boxerlusts GS ?

To be fair the 1100 version is generally. The v4 motor has got steadily better. There was a major revision to oil feeds and cam chains around the introduction of the aprc version and in 2016 they got non return valves in the heads to stop hot start oil starvation. Prior to that they could suffer valve guide wear at fairly low mileages and to this day they suffer from above average valve regression. Valve checks on time are critical on them to protect the top end. They have very stiff valve springs on them to achieve higher rpm but that hammers the seats. The rsv4 uses ti valves which helps a bit but the tuono uses steel ( and has a slightly lower rpm ceiling as a result)

There was a gearbox issue on earlier bikes too which seems to stem from poor hardening. Luckily it’s a cassette box so easier to sort. Electronics wise, overly complicated just like the bmw and every other modern bike.

Late (but not dead) KTM 690 Duke R in the garage... That engine is superb fun

Agree completely. I've never had an 'R' but would think they're fantastic because the normal versions were great totally bonkers fun.

That is a bike. Looked at what Lyndon did with his and other customer bikes. Bloody 'ell. Don't know what they are going for now but there are not many in the world. Get some pics up.

Tanneman, here we go. The bike is looking a bit well worn now after a lot of miles and several crashes but hey it's a travel bike. It was the first one Lyndon built back in 2014 even before Basil. It certainly doesn't look as nice as that Husky with the kit on. Sorry it's off topic of GS vs SDR but maybe it's some light relief

I recognise the bike. That blue really stands out. I think it featured in the thread where Walter Colebatch had one build or in Races to Places. Lyndon says the RFR is a better base to build on as the 690. I guess it is because the engine is a bit more powerful. I don't know much about these machines. There are few of them and not a lot of people know these bikes. What is the comparison between that and the newer 690/701?

I only know of one person that owns a Tuno.
There is a lot of positive to say about the Tuno, and he is very happy with the bike. But the word 'reliable' is not the first thought that strikes me when I observe his ownership. But even so, he is very enthusiastic about his bike, and has owned more than one...

The original engine was a 654cc and no more powerful than my early 2009 690 enduro, but far nicer due to the carb vs the early EFI which wasn't great. The RFR was lovely and mellow. I've now got the 732 engine which is a bit of a beast with so much torque but it certainly doesn't feel as refined as the latest 690/701 which are as smooth as silk. The biggest difference with the RFR is the suspension and handling, plus it carries 32 litres of fuel really well and is designed to be worked on quickly and easily. It's a work of art. Stripping the Rally Raid kit fairing and tanks off kitted up standard 690's was a nightmare in comparison. Then again the RFR was designed for a purpose (to race Dakar) and the modifications Lyndon does makes it even better, particularly as an adventure travel bike.

This is what I'm talking about. Piccies courtesy Husky with a rally kit produced by themselves and Aurora (see below). The best is the ones that use the same parts as the produced by KTM/Husky and then adapt to their own needs for the big bike rallies which ensure you get a better quality design for touring. Not so sure about the carbon fibre tower for everyday use but the best I have seen is from Aurora or similar where the design is based on analysis in enduro conditions and adapted to suit. The tower can be unbolted on one side to have access to the wiring if you need to and no cutting/drilling of the frame and the warranty is preserved. But the screen is a bit more effort to take off with that kit. The FE450 rally kit Dakar style, similar to KTM, has a very quick way of getting the screen off without having to undo bolts. Better range than the GSA, lighter (about 100kg ) and a proper bike for all roads and all conditions in the right hands. Currently doing the research because I would like to keep it for a long while.

Before that I have to comply with Sadiq Khan's ULEZ shit. What a ball ache and postponement of a project in waiting.

Get yourself over to my place before Xmas when the bike will probably going on holiday and you can have a look at the Nomad kit on my 501.

Arsey who is the good looking dude standing behind the Tuono 1100...you ?
Why is the pipe not blue and the tires not scrubbed in...he most be a poser...:D
Why is he wearing his thong over his shoulder...;)
I don't like the Tuono...What's the point of having a more upright superbike and still no hard bags or center-stand to make it a better road-bike than the RSV4 !
And all the thumper-talk bore me...When I was 12 years old I dreamed about the XR500 but by the time I was 16 that dream had been replaced by the R 80 G/S...Never looked at another thumper again...No power & too much vibration !
Bristolsaint...We all have different taste and preferences and that is fine with me...Like you said the 790/890 KTM's are play-bikes...Probably fun to ride on back-roads...But for the street I like more practical stuff...Windprotection/bags/centerstand are a must.Shaftdrive and Telelever additional pluses...I don't think I would ever buy another bike with chain-drive or a fork...:D
Tanneman...you said you are bored with the GSA...What GSA do you have ? Probably not a 1250...;)
If you have a 1200 I would be bored too...:comfort
But with a thumper or T7,A-T you will get bored even faster...
My advise...By a 1290SDR...The bike is definitely not boring as it is twitchy and the front wheel will see more air than asphalt...Just try not to race a guy on a 1250GS if the road is far from straight...:D
Arsey tell Kurt Russel Jr. I'm ready for him...If it's on a track I borrow my buddies S1000XR...:thumb

No it’s not me but someone who would kick your arse all over Baja.
Tyres not scrubbed in as that’s him collecting the bike with zero miles on the clock.

How do hard bags and a centre stand make a bike a better road bike? And why do you need a centre stand on a GS, if you’re dragging the pegs regularly?

I'm going in january but he looks like he is afraid of mexican whores like you are...:D Or what was your excuse...;)
Bring Nutty too ! He can watch and learn instead of asking stupid questions...I'm ready for the 3 of you...:thumb
