2021 1290S

Had a run over to Potteries Motorcycles this morning as they are the closest KTM dealer to me that opens on a Sunday to have a look at the new 1290 SAS.

They only had the orange ones in which I am not keen on the look of and overall prefer the styling of my 2017 black 1290 SAS.

Standard seat in high position not high enough for me at 6' 3" so would need one of the ergo seats when they are available. Otherwise looks a nice bike and sure I will get round to having a test ride later in the year.

Offered me £9k for mine with 11k miles so would be a big jump to change and so cannot see me considering it until there are some decent discounts to be had ;)

I’ve ordered the Orange colour scheme but yet to see one in the flesh as it were, just prefer it in the photos. I’ve asked for the pegs to be set to the lower position and I’ll be using an Airhawk. I was comfortable on the demo ride with standard seat & pegs in the high position so hopefully the extra leg room will make it better again.

Got, in my mind, a very good trade in on my 2012 GSA with 43,000 miles on the clock.

so how do these compare to the 2017 model? most of the changes seem to be things i don't care about (adaptive cruise................)

If you feel like a change and its within your reach - get one. If not, there really is little wrong with the 17 S. As a riding experience it's not a cosmic leap, but it is smoother and features like anti dive, excellent low speed manners and I guess adaptive cruise make the leap worth it for me. The adaptive cruise will end up being seen as more than a nice to have option, same as in cars.

Nothing wrong with the 2017 to 2020 1290 SAS/R - worth getting a test ride on a second hand one to compare with the new model ;)

Biggest change has to be the changed weight distribution resulting from the new fuel tank arrangement but having not test ridden one yet I cannot confirm.

Interested as to what spec the alleged more basic version will come with as I know I can live without adaptive cruise/keyless etc. The new 1290 SAS even has keyless to release the seats :blast

Asked dealer re switch gear indicators being a fault and also the eco seats etc removed from configurator he says they will look into it. Sure they will fix the issues its just annoying to the end user yet again :-( My bike has landed well 3 actually mine's one of these in the picture collection Wed NEW bike I hope.....

Looking for a CNC Sat nave bracket ? and ideas of top box?

Has anyone been available to find out details of the 3 year warranty if you take the bike on PCP? I’ve never used PCP in the past but may do so this time if there is a third year added to the warranty.

Good question ill ask him again i was hoping i could sign up then sack it pay it off but keep 3 yrs warranty I thought that advertising laws were that if you offer it on finance you still have to offer it on cash payers ?

That was my plan, but dealer couldn’t get any information about it from KTM when I was there. Hopefully he’ll have an answer when I collect the bike on Friday.

Could be like deposit contribution discounts, which is only available if you take a PCP deal.

Top box - I've got Bumot kit. The lower top box option suits me. Don't like big TB's generally.

Any reason not to go with the KTM screen mounted bracket - worked well for last 3 years on my 2017 SAS with BMW Nav 5.

Ref top box - just go for a Givi monokey plate and fitting kit and whichever box you fancy ;)

My dealer is trying to find out about this - I'm waiting for a call back. Seems odd that this isn't on dealers radar given its a pretty major spelling point!

For what is is worth had no warranty work done in the first 2 years of ownership of my 1290 (other than the fuel tank filter recall at first service) and nothing in the year after the warranty expired - but yes a nice to have ;)

I had an oil pressure switch changed on my 1150 back in 2001, no other warranty work on that or my 1200 in the last 20 years. Far more gizmos to go wrong though on bikes now and no doubt a lot more expensive to fix if they go wrong.

I had the fuel tank sender replaced, the rear shock rebuilt and repaired, the ignition button changed so yes I reckon a decent warranty on a new model is probably a good thing and three years would be very good but should be standard now.

Incidentally does anyone know if there are any after market exhaust end cans available yet other then the [too expensive, large and disappointing] Akropovic.
I'm hoping for an Arrow, perfect sound I reckon and brings the 1290 to life.

Probably too soon for any other exhausts yet.
Akra and KTM work together so I guess they get early access to new designs.
I know Gorazd at Wings is still working on a new exhaust to fit the new bike.

Spoke to a couple of dealers at the weekend regarding this poverty version and answer was forum talk & rumor only, no truth ?
As far as I know its only Triumph who have retrospectively done this with any model ( Tiger 900/850 )?
Next are plans for the Superduke GT to have all the new toys that are on the 1290. I imagine that this will include the pod fuel tanks design.

New bike day today

85 miles done. Ace.

30-60mph you only need 5th gear. As I said before this will make an awesome tourer.

Bike feels tight. Sure a few hundred miles will sort.

A couple of odd things:

1. The stock seat is perfect for me on highest setting but it keeps on dropping down into the low setting. A design fault I think.

2. In cruise control, operating the clutch doesn't cancel it. Old bike used to. On the upside you can change gear as you accelerate and if you set cruise control for 60 miles an hour for example the cruise control will stay on during the gear changes - I think this is a good thing but one to get used to.

Yes we too had a NEW BIKE DAY Micks seat was doing as yours My bike the thing i hate the most is the turn signal cant get them to cancel on the button!!! Plus Hill hold hit and miss ? Then on way home

Home safe and sound slightly traumatic day after visiting Glen Nichols we ride home and on the gas my bike stoped put it from sports into street mode still wouldn't start i ha do push it to a safe location where upon inspection i was showing 80miles in the tank. Only to realise it was out of fuel! My friendly neiblour Pete Christmas came to the rescue with a jerry can! So im back at Judd Racing in the morning to be diagnostic plug in...

Petcock not opened by the dealer on one side, effectively halving the range. Fuel gauge shows remaking fuel but it’s no accessible. Simple fix, just open the Petcock.

Checking mine

They've changed the side stand foot so my larger foot plate add on doesn't fit

How have the dealers fitted your rear number plate? I've got 4 ugly KTM style bolts holding mine on. They've changed the way it fixes from the 17.

The indicator button is very poor indeed. When the last bike was perfect, how could they possibly screw that up!!?

One other thing. You can electronically lower the bike. There are settings High/Standard/Low/ 0-100%. Putting the bike in sport mode and the 'Low' makes for a very aggressive stance - very flickable.
