My first Honda since I sold my TL125 here a few years ago - I rode my new to me 2022 Goldwing home from Blackpool to the Midlands yesterday. On a chilly day and arguably under dressed for the job, I felt that a little more weather protection would have been handy. I could fit the Tour screen, but I was wondering if there’s anything between the two, as I do like the look of the bike with a smaller screen.

Is there an online, UK based group that’s an equivalent to this one? It would be great to pick up the odd thing second hand if the condition and price is right, plus hints and tips to get the best out of the bike.

Cheers

I bought a larger screen for my Goldwing Bagger to use in the winter and cut it down in size with a jigsaw plenty of masking tape to protect screen rub edge down with wet and dry then a quick blast with heat gun perfect edge cant tell difference from factory edge..

I bought the tall (ie standard screen fitted to the Tour) screen as part of a pack for my bike, but I find it a bit too tall as I’m looking through it , and even on the lowest setting it’s about 2 inches too tall to see clearly over.
I’ve only used it once away (I live in Guernsey ) and it was brilliant in the cold and wet . Only issue was in the rain , the rain drops make it more difficult to see through . I also had planned to get it cut down about 3 inches but the guy supposed to do it let me down , so I lost interest .
I’ve done three long trips on mine now -twice to Spain and France and once to Germany/Austria and I use the short screen which I leave fully up .

Anyway, utterly great bikes . Love mine and it’s a keeper as long as I can manage it , which is pretty easy to be fair .

How many miles on the bike ?

It’s worth re syncing the DCT every few 1000.
It’s easy and takes less than five minutes .
Have the bike at operating temperature , ie warm but not hot .
Put it on main stand and all switched off .
Hold down the D button as you power on the bike .
Then press DDNDN in that order and the gear indicator (which should be showing N) should blank with a line instead of the N .
Now start the bike and you’ll hear the gears start to click.
Takes less than 2 minutes normally . When done the N will reappear .

You don’t need to do it but it makes the gear changes like butter , as after time they obviously somehow go slightly out of sync .

Jon, which model have you bought ?, a bagger or a proper one :augie
Manual or DCT ?
I did a lot of miles on mine ( 2020 tour) and never had any problems with weather protection.
There are forums out there, but to be honest I never found them to be much use.
As Arsey said if it’s a DCT re synch the transmission occasionally to keep the changes silky smooth.
The most important thing is ENJOY it, you’ve bought a very special machine 👍

RTQ=1/2FA.

He’s got a 2022 bike which came with a short screen. So it will be the non Tour and will be DCT as they don’t do a manual 😜
It will also be the faster blue colour.

Did they not do a manual in 22? Did that end in 21?

Though that one is of course a DCT

Dunno but pretty sure when I ordered mine there was no manual option, not that I wanted one

I was looking around the same time you bought yours , The dealer said manuals were down to individual dealer stock at that time, he had a few manual wings left

Yes but I meant the 2022 model year . Think they stopped manuals in 21 so obviously there could still be a few lurking in dealers a year later .

Sorry for the delayed reply - life is full of aging parent at present…
Thanks for your input and congratulations 🙂. I bought what I thought would be the best touring bike for the job last year, a 2016 R1200RT Iconic, but the riding position and seat comfort didn’t suit me, and I found the centre of gravity height, coupled with the seat height, sapped confidence on uneven surfaces. Although the Wing (a DCT non-Tour, in the blue with red flashes) is a chunk heavier, it feels like the weight is carried lower, the seat means a more secure footing plus the crawler gear means not trying to foot it backwards uphill. I’m hopeful of a long and enjoyable time with this epic bike.

I've got the ex-Stever1 tour, and do wonder if the low screen might suit me better than the tour screen.

As I'm not too far away (north Glos) perhaps we could swap them over for a couple of weeks to see how we get on. When the weather improves that is.

I’d say the low screen is much better in most situations. You can still ride with open visor at 80 mph and it’s fine . It was even ok at 110 mph on autobahn

I've found to make the ride quiet I have to raise the tour screen to the point where I have to look through it rather than over it. I really dislike doing that.

Part of the delight of the R1300GS I tried a while back was getting a quiet, calm ride while still looking over the screen.

Just cut mine down .

Bought a jigsaw blade for acrylic

Masked it off and cut it then used method as above with and dry and a heat gun

Very pleased with result ( after I scratched it a bit and took another inch off )

Perfect

You shouldn't have any problem finding a large take-off screen from a Tour as some of them buy even larger ones. When riding in cold or rain I found the mounting brackets in my line of sight with the short screen raised all the way up, and for the best low height for me was partially raised. The Tour shield cut down 3" (about 1/2 way between) with a ban saw was perfect.

Hi all,
I realised that I hadn’t responded to say thanks for the replies. I had no luck finding a second hand Tour screen, but bought a repro one off eBay that fits perfectly. Early signs are that it’s just the job… I’ve also fitted a front mudguard extension, and bought a Shad top box and mount. Shame the mounting plate is a chunk of steel - could have easily been aluminium.

Two things I’d like on the bike are the engine mounted lights and a heated seat. I got a quote at the supplying dealer for £800 to fit the lights - yikes! Our friends across the water sell the kit of parts (pattern) for about £140 so I may take a punt and have a go at fitting them - how hard can it be? Has anyone done this?

As for the seat, has anyone found a means of getting a heated seat on a non-Tour? I’d be interested to hear.

Cheers

If you fancy DIY for some service tasks, like the Air Filter, you might find this guy's video series helpful. OK, he's a bit of a pedant, so you need to bare with it: -

I’m told the wiring harness is the same on all versions, so you just have to fit the switch and find a seat off a tour IE a scrapyard.
