2024 Himalayan 450

Soon be 1st (running in) service Peter, and you can really open up the beast's full potential 😀 👍 sounds like your enjoying it ✔️

It's actually a bit frustrating having such a short oil change service Jaz. I've done 214 miles and only 80 odd to go! 74 of those will be the run to Dumfries! I'll take a wee overnight and wild camp in the Borders just to check out the pack for camping. Other than that, it's in the garage until the 27th when the service is due!

Can’t you do 300 miles in a day or two and get it done, booking an appointment within seven days of when you bought it?

That date was the first they had available when I picked up the bike, Richard. They're stappit fu'! I daresay I could ask them for another date but it's not that big a deal. I have the airhead GS back on the road now so I can use that for stuff in the meantime.

I do wonder though what kind of oil they put in for that first 300 miles!

If its like my old ktm 390 ( same build factory) its mineral oil. My ktm stealer couldnt do the first service for 6/8 weeks so my bike was idle for about three weeks 😡. Contrast that to my Piaggio/ RE dealer who offers seven day out servicing👍👍

Very light running in oil, I did it myself on my Interceptor as it was covid lock down time. I used a service kit with oil from Hitchcock's, followed the inspections in the handbook, did the tappets (valve clearances with adjustment on 2) took a few picks, recorded everything and kept receipts. Produced these for dealer at the end of lockdown, they approved, stamped the book so no warranty issue. 👍👍
Strange days them covid times.

Succumbed to temptation and booked a test ride tomorrow morning (Friday) will be going over on my 1250rt as dealer is both BMW & Royal Enfield, which simplifies changing bikes, I am a reluctant purchaser but the 1250 is getting heavy when pushing around, fine on the road so maybe the sensible thing, got a solo trip planned to Provence in September, just wonder if the Himmie is really up to it??? have heard they may benefit from a smaller rear sprocket for a lazier cruise at the 70/80mph area can find larger sprockets but not smaller at the moment?

No reason why not . Mines going to Picos in September

Why would it not be up to it? You'll certainly have to adjust your expectations re comfortable high speed cruising on the autoroutes but when you need a burst of speed it will sit at 70 plus. All the reviews and my own (albeit limited so far) experience suggest that it's up to it.

Give it a try.

I think performance wise it would be plenty quick enough as it really doesn’t feel slow or weedy in any way at legal or just above legal speeds (and i also have a 1300). one niggle you may find is the vibes through the pegs at 70mph which i found really high pitched and quite uncomfortable on the bike when i initially set off and hit a dual carriageway, on the way back to dealer on same road the vibes were barely if at all discernible, was that an engine now being on 300 miles and warm versus when I set off 200 miles and cold, was i doing a few mph more, I dunno. No vibes noticed at the bars at all.

I've added a bit to my original post re sprockets ect, I've done the Picos loads of times, its different to hop on ferry Plymouth - Santander and almost immediately be on on roads probably well suited to the Himalayan compared to a 1200 mile round trip from Calais to South of France at sustained high cruising speeds which I have also done loads of times on bigger bikes, choices? :) I could keep the 1250 buy the himmie and sell my R1100RT ? I have the test ride and see how it goes

Yeah but I’ll be riding back up to St Malo

So went for a test ride on the Himalayan, also due to test a Honda 500NX & Triumph 400 and aYam Tracer 7 the Honda I saw first, impressions were bland and plasticity, sat on it run the motor and said I would come back later for a road test, Triumph was just tiny, Yam was 2500 more dosh, but all is irrelevant because as soon as I done a mile or two I knew the Himmie was the one one, did about 30 mile on and most impressed got back and placed a order for the grey / blue one in the pic, also ordered a rear rack and pannier frames and will need to explore luggage options once I get it, delivery in two weeks or less, happy days! :D nice surprise to find I get 3 years warranty and 3 years recovery inc EU.
I decided to keep my 1250RT and not trade it yet, for the longer continental trips I still hope to do

Good choice Mark. Riding it makes all the difference!

I took mine for a wee bimble today. After a few miles the low petrol tell tale came on. It started counting down at 50 miles, I think? Anyway, after twenty miles or so, I filled up. Here's the result below...

So that's 13 litres used and 244 miles. The dealer told me the bike was full to the brim (and it felt like it!) so that makes 80mpg!

Saying that, if the tank is 17 litres when full that would suggest that the low petrol tell tale is somewhat conservative. Which is how it should be, I suppose.

Another observation: the tank is a pain to fill. The cap will not lie back and interferes with the hose "pistol". There's also a bar across the filler aperture which makes insertion of the pistol awkward. Minor gripes I know!

Still enjoying the bike though and looking forward to the 80 ish miles to the dealer on Monday morning for the oil change service.

2 weeks max maybe sooner, for the tubed version, the tubeless are August onwards, may have preferred the tubeless but didn't want to wait so will live with the tubed version
my dealer told me June for a white one when I ordered a couple of weeks back. It did sound a bit too good to be true but time will tell I guess.
