Tested an S and it is FAST, notably quicker at all revs than my remapped 1290 with an Akra (but not as smooth) although part of it is because the TCS is more advanced, if I turn TC off on my 1290 it is a bit quicker than Sport mode, but in the real world protection from a high side is a bit more important, but the 1390 allows it to pull hard with the front wheel light, or even hovering and skipping along which sees my 1290 holding the power back.
Even so the engine is really impressive, no noticeable glitch when the cams shift, it just feels immense at all revs.....
... but I cannot see many UK folk "offroading" the R, but if you are brave enough, or like really shit back grounds and the odd gravel track there cannot be anything much better than one of these beasts.
For poncy touring I think the S is the better bet, but that feels more edgy and less relaxed than my 1290 so I would take a close look at the 1300GS now it has shifted a little to the sporty side of life with the 1300, but the KTM is well priced - even before the winter fire sale they claim they will not be having.
