20w50 specification... is it the same?...

Just put asda 20w50 at 5 quid for 4.5 litres in my 12 and certainly runs quieter.Being trying to get through to customer services to find out the API rating but to no avail .Anybody know what it is .Heard a rumour its made by Comma or Total

I might change it though for some specific oil with a rating on it

I bought some 20W/50 oil for classic cars for £12.99 for 5l from Halfords.

I used that before it's good stuff, I would buy all you can at the mo, as Halfords are discontinuing it according to the shop yesterday

I was told Comma is the biggest producer in UK/Europe and make for Total and Mobil

The Halfords 20/50 is Duckhams Q for classic engines..Mineral, API.SF/CD

Got a gallon in the garage.. but it says on the back "Traditional oil for engines up to 1980-Ideal for older design engines where oil consumption is a problem"

Then on an earlier chart it says that SF rating is obsolete

Got 2 gallons of semi synthetic Vauxhall 10/40 (API SL) in the garage as well..

So what should I bung in the '03 ADV? (16K)

I recon Duckhams Q should be OK & the price is pretty good too, the place I saw the 1ltr bottles advertised didn't list larger containers ( a 20ltr one should be cheaper still)

Just bought 10ltrs of this from Opie Oils for £37.99 delivered
That should last a few top-ups

It is API CE Plus / SJ which replaces the obsolete (but just as good I imagine) SF,SG or SH as recommended in my handbook for a 1150GSA (7th edition GB).

Used Motul 15W-40 before that which was fine. Again from Opie Oils.

It is in a pretty bottle for the Harley boys marketed as 'V-Twin' even showing one of their shiny engines!

I am sure if it had a BMW boxer engine on it and was marketed for large capacity 'Boxers' people who don't read the API categories would snap it up too

Too much choice that's the problem today..

Anyway, really rate Opie Oils for service and price (if using club discount), ordered yesterday, arrived this morning at 07:50.

Also nipped in to Oxford BMW yesterday to get an oil filter. £10.90 including all the crush/seal washers for the fluids (final drive, gearbox, sump). Better value than the independents I think..if you are passing.
