24000 mile service

Check out what Honda want for checking valve clearances. That's usually around 24K and on top of normal service costs.

Whilst slightly different but in the same vein.....just been quoted £557 for a full 12000 mile service on my 2010 RT.

Is this only relevant if the clearances need adjusting rather than checking?

My last Blackbird didn't need adjusting before 32,000 miles when I sold it. The previous Blackbird and Firestorm also didn't need the clearances touching.

Admittedly, I only put 20k on my last one, and apart from service items it only required a £25.00 cam chain tensioner, which is a whole lot less the my RT.

In fact, the only costs I had apart from service items was to put two cam chain tensioners on the three previous Honda's.

I've just been quoted £475 24k service, it's daylight robbery

I had mine serviced this week & share your pain. :comfort

But it isn't daylight robbery when you look around the place. Running a staffed showroom is a very expensive game, and not much income seems to come in between Oct & March.

At last someone that knows the score :thumb2. Get all these keyboard whingers to experience the actual day to day running of a dealership for a month and see what they thought after that.:eek:

its not as simple as that though is it, a big part of it is the "service experience" - and in 15 years of year round biking I've yet to come across a dealer (of any make that I've owned) treat me like THEY WANT my custom! :nenau

and there is no getting away from BMW (parts) prices - I was quoted over £200 for changing brake pads during a routine service - do they think I'm bonkers and have a bottomless pit of cash?! even if they do last 3 times longer than other pads, thats mental! :rob

It's about as complicated as a pair of roller skates!

Do it your fecking self....!!

Come on then, you better explain why:augie

I've just had a full major service on a 2 year old German car and paid £350, I just can't believe £475 is value for money. Last year I paid £300 for a 18k service this year £475 that's nearly £800 in 2 years for run of the mill servicing

spot on - consumables are mega, Brembo pads are £30 pair on line, but at least £50 from BMW, I will say though that some mechanical spares are much nearer and have bought various odds and ends at BMW as price was same or less than a BMW independant (ie gearbox position sensor), always ask they do seem to want to try, at least where i live

Oil prices

No, not what the A-Rabs at OPEC set, I'm talking on what dealers bill you for engine oil on the service schedule - it generally equates to being priced at the RRP of the smallest available retail unit.

Never mind it probably will have been pumped from a bulk tank purchased at a heavily discounted rate. I could dig out the bill but from memory the last service had "x" litres of oil at something like £17 per litre, plus VAT. Now that does wind me up... and it's not just BMW main dealers cos I've spotted the same with Honda and Suzuki.

The last Castrol Power 1 that I bought was about £32 for 4 x 1 litre bottles, and that was including P&P - and yet the main dealer is charging me nearer to double that? OK, they could bury £30 pounds or so somewhere else and I'd think "The oil's reasonably priced..." but FFS!!

If we're talking utter bollox and greed as you eloquently put then you might want to consider the car services prices you've just quoted which probably amount to nothing more than an oil and filter change and a cursory check over given the service schedules on modern cars. £350 for an oil change mmmm I rest my case.

I'm with Skywalker :thumb

Copied and pasted from one of my posts on another thread ....

"The motorcycle industry is seasonal, the so called profits aren't there week in week out, month in, month out. The 'bike industry is in no way similar to the car side of things ....

The profit margin for motorcycles is less than 10%, leaving very little room for manoeuvre, unlike the heftier mark up for cars. Motorcycles are a leisure industry, the car game is not.

All the dealers have to conform to the corporate image, whether they employ five or fifty people. They get no choice to shop around for furniture and fittings!

A new bike launch? All the promotional stuff is delivered to the dealer, brochures, wall hangings etc quickly followed by a demand for a few grand from BMW HQ .... it all has to be paid for by the dealer.

Technicians wages? Ha ... I know for a fact that the average trained up technician earns very little over the minimum wage. £1,000 to £1,200 a month take home OK for you? Oh, but of course, it'll be a pleasure to work for a BMW main dealer won't it, you won't be wanting a lot of money for doing so!

The £60 to £100 an hour you're charged for your servicing doesn't all go to the Technician .... or the owner. The overheads are there 24/7 whether any bikes are sold or not. Not many motorcycles are sold between November to March but the overheads, rates, rent, wages etc still need paying.

As said earlier, it amazes me that people pay 13k to 20k for a motorcycle then start whinging about the costs of servicing. It also amazes me the number of people who think its all a charity .... for them, their very own charity. Time and time again I see punters wanting the maximum allowance against the bike they're taking in (and of course they're going to take all the extras off, even expecting the dealer to do that for nothing) AND THEN they want their new 'bike price knocked down AND some goodies thrown in. FFS"

If it's a rip off like you claim either put up or shut up and vote with your feet. End of problem .... the dealers will, quite simply, go out of business then, won't they!

It's not a case of put up or shut up its about having a view and an opinion which I'm entitled to give , surely if the price of oils and consumable are realistically price they would surely get more business

I personally support the dealers by buying clothing and helmets at premium prices
