26+6=1. Or 2, depending. Alternatively: In search of a Hufflepuff.

Having ridden some of the roads around the hills in these parts it's not difficult to see the advantage of waging a guerilla war for the locals who obviously knew their way around the area very well.

This is the ambush site.

Stuff part 2.
Béal na Bláth.
A few kilometres away is another site crucial in the story of modern Ireland.
Once they'd freed themselves (sort of) of The British the Irish looked inwards and started in one another, those in favour of the Treaty, those against.
Michael Collins (that man again) crucial in the War of Independence signed the Treaty then paid with life for so doing.

You don't have to go far around these parts to find memorials from the time. Many like the above some like this of innocent people caught in the crossfire.

Checked in to the B&B, as brilliant as last night's was tonight's was indifferent, despite being €70 dearer and not including breakfast.

We headed into town to meet Sting and Eddie Irvine.

Clonakilty, like much of West Cork, has a proud Fenian heritage beyond Collins and wears it proudly.

For those who aren't interested in that stuff it's a pretty little tourist town with lots of places to eat and drink.

No fans of Government Broadcasters by the look of things....

Well buggerations, Sting stood us up. Not even text message, story of my life.
Eddie Irvine may well have been there but as I have no idea who he is or what he does I wouldn't have known.

In all seriousness if you're in town and want a pub with a little atmosphere, a nice pint of Guinness and live music you could do worse. I'm not certain how many locals were in there but it was all pretty relaxing until a fellow Plastic like myself, though considerably more pints in than me, grabbed the microphone and did a very passable 'The Rare Old Times' even remembering some of the words. He then decided it would be a good idea to regale us all with his best Elvis impression at which point Phil and I left, alone again, naturally.

We've a long day ahead of us heading to, then round the Beara Peninsula via Dunmanway so we agreed to be away by 08:30.
As I type this we're still in Clonakilty about to try and find somewhere Phil can get some electrical component spray for the temperamental Himmy.
No matter, the sun is shining and I'm in Ireland.

We're in Glengarriff where there's a distinct lack of Lemon Meringue Pie, I have raised a formal complaint.
The wee lassie in the café tells me trade has dropped right off this week since the kids went back to school last week.

We're about to head off on The Beara Peninsula, my favourite part of Ireland outside Donegal.
